It's especially important to come if you've been working too hard, since anime is the best way to relieve stress. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Elections Help make the club better! On 2 May we will be holding elections for next years' officers. Elected positions are: - President - Vice President - Secretary - Treasurer To hold these positions, you must be an MIT student (undergraduate or graduate). In addition, there are a number of important appointed offices (librarian, industrial liaison(s), acquisitions, publicity, communications), along with many voluntary positions that help keep the club running, keep the showings happening, and keep the library functioning. Please send a note to anime-inquiry to register your interest in running for office, and talk to the club officers about what it's like to be an officer. We have a page describing the election procedure here: http://web.mit.edu/anime/www/elections.html We will put candidates' statements up on that page as we get them. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Karaoke Karaoke will be on Saturday May 3 in room 4-270, from 2-5pm. Everyone is welcome. We've got plenty of timed songs, so even if you didn't make a request this time around, we'll have something for you to sing! Snacks and beverages provided. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Geneon going-out-of-business DVD donation drive So if you've been thinking about sponsoring a disc but haven't now's your chance, what better way to prove your love for a series than buying it for us. ^^ In late September, it was announced that Geneon, one of the largest US anime companies, is getting out of the DVD sales business. Unfortunately, there were still a lot of DVDs we wanted to buy from them! To supplement our normal acquisitions budget of money from the UA, memberships, and refreshments, we're also asking for your help in picking up good series that might be going away for good. For more information, see: http://web.mit.edu/anime/www/donations/geneon-oob-2007.html ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Membership Did your club membership expire in January? Renew now for continued library checkouts and other membership privileges. Or start a new membership for the term, the year, or a longer period. Ask for a form at the showing or print it in advance from our web site at: http://web.mit.edu/anime/register/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Pizza We'll be using the same token-based pizza sales system we have been using for awhile: we'll sell tokens two episodes before intermission that you can exchange for slices during intermission. This week's pizza options are: $1.50 Plain cheese $2.00 Pepperoni $2.00 Hamburger (this week's feature flavor) Future weeks will feature: - Sausage - Grilled Chicken - Hawaiian (ham + pineapple) - Hamburger ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Pizza Ordering Procedure To bring you a more reliable pizza experience, we're going to be taking orders using a new procedure. Instead of taking a poll on the blackboard and then selling slices for cash, we'll sell tokens early in the evening which can be exchanged for slices during intermission. If there are extra slices, we'll sell tokens for them at intermission, but advance orders will get priority. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Library This showing (4/18 and 4/25) will have a substitute librarian. Things will mostly go as usual, but you'll need to submit your requests earlier: no later than 4pm. The fansub sampler DVD from a few weeks ago is still available. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Silence If you make noise during the anime, our mad scientists will rewire your brain so that attractive members of the opposite sex look like vacuum cleaners, and vice-versa. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Programme 7:10 Phoenix (Hi no Tori) 5,6,12,13 Osamu Tezuka (1926-1989) was an incredibly prolific manga creator who is often credited with founding the medium almost single-handedly. Only a small fraction of his works are available in the US: he is probably best known for Astro Boy and Black Jack, though a wider variety of his manga works have licensed recently by Vertical, Inc. Phoenix was perhaps Tezuka's most ambitious project, a dozen separate stories united by the title character, an almost god-like shining bird whose blood is said to grant eternal life. The stories all explore themes of reincarnation and immortality, but vary widely in tone and setting, alternating between historical Japan and science-fiction futures. This most recent anime adaptation was a short 2004 TV series co-produced by NHK, Japan's public broadcaster, and unusually, WNET, the primary PBS affiliate in the New York City market. It adapts a subset of the arcs from the original manga into 1- to 4-part episodes; we'll be sampling two of the shorter sci-fi ones: Episodes 5-6: Resurrection (vol. 5 in Viz's manga release) Leon is brought back to life with artificial brain implants after an accident, but his perceptions of the world are altered: people now look strange, and he falls in love with a discarded robot. Episodes 12-13: The Future (vol. 2 in Viz's release) By 3404, mankind has reached a technological peak and begun a decline. Masato Yamanobe has to go on the run when his girlfriend Tamami, a shape-shifting alien known as a moopie, is persecuted by the Earth authorities. 9:20 Ergo Proxy 17-20 In a dystopian future domed city where robots and immigrants do all the hard work, a mysterious humanoid monster is on the loose, and the only one who can stop it is Re-l Mayer, an inspector of the Citizen Intelligence Bureau who also happens to be the granddaughter of the city's regent. This stylish sci-fi thriller has a distinguished pedigree, produced by Manglobe (Samurai Champloo), directed by Shukou Murase (Witch Hunter Robin), and written chiefly by Dai Sato (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, among others). Between the "Cogito" virus that's infecting the city's robots, and the "Ergo" in the title, you shouldn't be surprised to see philosophical themes of self-awareness under the action; a number of characters are also named after French post-structuralists. And, speaking of affectation, Re-l has a heavy touch with her blue eyeshadow. 11:05 Kyo Kara Maoh! 1-2 Yuri Shibuya was living a pretty normal life. That changed the day he was dunked into a toilet after an attempt to save a classmate from a gang of bullies. Instead of just getting a good soaking, he's pulled in. The next thing he knows, he's in a world that vaguely resembles medieval Europe. If that's not odd enough, he's told that he is to be the next Maoh, just because he has black hair and black eyes. The Maoh is the King of the Mazoku, who are coexisting not-so-peacefully with the humans in this world. Much to his subjects' dismay, he's totally different from the rulers they're accustomed to. He's kind, considerate, a believer in justice, and not willing to use violence to solve conflicts. Not exactly someone they want running a country on the very brink of war. Now, Yuri has to deal with trying to become a good Maoh, while at the same time attempting to adapt to this lands' customs and culture, all in a world where the tension between the humans and Mazoku is reaching its peak. *Borrowed from Anime News Network* ----------------------------------------------------------------------- (This showing is made possible in part with funding from Finboard and the Undergraduate Association of MIT.)
