No time to worry about your finals or all that work you were supposed to do. To truly prepare for the funnest week of the semester you have to purge all that stuff with some of the most wacky anime we could find. As a special prize for staying through the whole thing, we'll have a drawing for an Excel Saga boxset for our members who can last through the night. Good luck. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Win an Excel Saga box set I'm putting this here to draw attention to it. If you stay until the end of this week's showing (and are a card carrying member of the club) then you'll have a dazzling chance at winning an Excel Saga Box set. Can you do it? Rules: No current or incoming board members will be eligible. You must have your membership card to participate. Some exceptions may be made due to short notice. You must be present at the drawing to be eligible. Any obvious attempts to counter the spirit of the drawing will disqualify you. This means you can't skip part of the showing and still be eligible. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Open Officer Positions Help make the club better! For the next month or so we will be looking to fill the positions which remain after elections. The elected positions which remain are: - Vice President - Secretary To hold these positions, you must be an MIT student (undergraduate or graduate). In addition, there are a number of important appointed offices (librarian, industrial liaison(s), acquisitions, publicity, communications), along with many voluntary positions that help keep the club running, keep the showings happening, and keep the library functioning. Please send a note to anime-inquiry to register your interest in running for office, and talk to the club officers about what it's like to be an officer. We have a page describing the election procedure here: http://web.mit.edu/anime/www/elections.html ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Geneon going-out-of-business DVD donation drive So if you've been thinking about sponsoring a disc but haven't now's your chance, what better way to prove your love for a series than buying it for us. ^^ In late September, it was announced that Geneon, one of the largest US anime companies, is getting out of the DVD sales business. Unfortunately, there were still a lot of DVDs we wanted to buy from them! To supplement our normal acquisitions budget of money from the UA, memberships, and refreshments, we're also asking for your help in picking up good series that might be going away for good. For more information, see: http://web.mit.edu/anime/www/donations/geneon-oob-2007.html ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Membership Did your club membership expire in January? Renew now for continued library checkouts and other membership privileges. Or start a new membership for the term, the year, or a longer period. Ask for a form at the showing or print it in advance from our web site at: http://web.mit.edu/anime/register/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Pizza We'll be using the same token-based pizza sales system we have been using for awhile: we'll sell tokens two episodes before intermission that you can exchange for slices during intermission. This week's pizza options are: $1.50 Plain cheese $2.00 Pepperoni $2.00 Hawaiian (ham + pineapple) (this week's feature flavor) Future weeks will feature: - Hamburger - Sausage - Grilled Chicken - Hawaiian (ham + pineapple) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Pizza Ordering Procedure To bring you a more reliable pizza experience, we're going to be taking orders using a new procedure. Instead of taking a poll on the blackboard and then selling slices for cash, we'll sell tokens early in the evening which can be exchanged for slices during intermission. If there are extra slices, we'll sell tokens for them at intermission, but advance orders will get priority. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Library The library will be open as usual this week and for the rest of May, but it will close for our annual inventory during the first half of June. If we have a showing on June 6th, there will be no checkouts, and you will need to return any outstanding items by Sunday, June 8th. There also will be no checkouts on June 13th, but we expect to have the library running again by June 20th. The sampler DVD+RW from the beginning of the month is still available. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Silence If talk during the showing, Tsukune-chan will punish you . . . or possibly help you, it's unclear which one is worse. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Programme 7:10 Naikaku Kenryoku Hanzai Kyousei Torishimarikan Zaizen Jotaro 1 Government Crime Investigation Agent Zaizen Jotaro is an international man of mystery somewhat in the vein of James Bond or Golgo 13, but his weapon of choice is a super-unlimited credit card which he uses to buy luxury goods that impress friends and enemies alike. (Of course, he also has the requisite invincibility in a fire-fight.) Watch with awe as he brings down corrupt and yakuza-influenced government officials, while at the same time picking up world-class suits and luxury automobiles (for business use). This short-lived 2006 series adapts a 17-volume seinen manga series of the same name from manly-men magazine Comic Bunch (Angel Heart, Fist of the Blue Sky). But apparently this apparently un-ironic twist on salary-man wish fulfillment doesn't work as well on the screen. Of course it's not helped by the production values, which are uniformly low. 7:45 Majokko Tsukune-chan 1-4 This wacky show makes fun of everything we know and love in Magical Girl animes. Meet Tsukune-chan, a magical girl out to save all the people she can. They say you can't make an omellete without breaking a few eggs. And Tsukune-chan has certianly taken this to heart. Watch people get helped/hurt as Tsukune-chan and her friends/enemies save/destroy the world. 9:10 Kamen no Maid Guy 1-2 17-year-old Naeka Fujiwara and her brother Kousuke have a pretty normal life - sure, they don't take very good care of their house since their parents have been missing, but that doesn't stop Naeka from winning kendo matches and otherwise participating in normal high-school life. However, their insanely rich grandfather has shown up and has supplied them with two maids - a woman named Fubuki and a musclebound, masked "Maid Guy" named Kogarashi. This series has a fair share of fanservice, especially involving Naeka's bust, but it has even more absolutely insane Kogarashi action, as he demonstrates previously unknown-to-science Maid Guy abilities and an unhealthy devotion to his tasks. 10:00 Kyouran Kazoku Nikki 1 Average male protagonist Ouka Midarezaki has to save the world by playing house with a bunch of characters who just might be reincarnations of an ancient spirit god of destruction. A couple of them are normal looking people, but others are a cat girl, a lion, an electric jellyfish, and bio-engineered android weapon. This somewhat unusual variation on the moe family-style harem (compare: Sister Princess, Yumeria) is based on a light novel series of the same name. 10:35 Tamala 2010 movie Tamala, a young cat from Cat Earth, grows bored of living there and sets out in a spaceship to find her home planet, Orion. While en route, her ship is shot down, and she crashes on Planet Q instead. The movie follows Tamala's (mis)adventures in Hate City, her interactions with the creatures living there, and her sinister connections to Tatla (a giant CGI robot cat), the Minerva Cult, and the mega-conglomerate Catty & Co. The movie's plot is strongly influenced by the writing of Thomas Pynchon, while much of the artwork is reminiscent of Hello Kitty, Felix the Cat, and Astro Boy. Most of the movie is in black and white, though color CGI scenes are juxtaposed with jarring effect. This is not your typical anime movie. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- (This showing is made possible in part with funding from Finboard and the Undergraduate Association of MIT.)
