But most of that excitement won't start until after graduation and summer attendance has settled down a bit. Starting June 13th we'll be showing two summer series. First up will be the ever popular Fullmetal Alchemist; it needs no introduction. Our second summer series is Master Keaton, which we sampled this year and is what I consider a unappreciated gem. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Open Officer Positions Help make the club better! For the next month or so we will be looking to fill the positions which remain after elections. The one elected position which remains is: - Secretary To hold these positions, you must be an MIT student (undergraduate or graduate). In addition, there are a number of important appointed offices (industrial liaison(s), acquisitions, communications), along with many voluntary positions that help keep the club running, keep the showings happening, and keep the library functioning. Please send a note to anime-inquiry to register your interest in running for office, and talk to the club officers about what it's like to be an officer. We have a page describing the election procedure here: http://web.mit.edu/anime/www/elections.html ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Membership Did your club membership expire in January? Renew now for continued library checkouts and other membership privileges. Or start a new membership for the term, the year, or a longer period. Ask for a form at the showing or print it in advance from our web site at: http://web.mit.edu/anime/register/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Pizza We'll be using the same token-based pizza sales system we have been using for awhile: we'll sell tokens two episodes before intermission that you can exchange for slices during intermission. This week's pizza options are: $1.50 Plain cheese $2.00 Pepperoni $2.00 Sausage (this week's feature flavor) Future weeks will feature: - Grilled Chicken - Hawaiian (ham + pineapple) - Hamburger - Sausage ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Pizza Ordering Procedure To bring you a more reliable pizza experience, we're going to be taking orders using a new procedure. Instead of taking a poll on the blackboard and then selling slices for cash, we'll sell tokens early in the evening which can be exchanged for slices during intermission. If there are extra slices, we'll sell tokens for them at intermission, but advance orders will get priority. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Library We'll be running library checkouts in the normal way this week, but it will be the last Friday checkouts before the library closes for our annual inventory: there won't be any checkouts on June 6th or 13th. Any items you borrow this week need to be returned by Sunday. June 8th. The sampler DVD+RW from the beginning of the month is still available. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Silence Did you know that one of the club's officers' dead sister was a skilled swordswoman who pledged her life to defend anime watchers from distraction? Keep quiet during the showing if you don't want to find out who. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Programme 7:10 5 Centimeters Per Second movie This relatively short feature consists of three episodes following lead character Takaki Tono as he grows up. In the first, "Okasho", he takes a train trip to visit a friend from elementary school who had moved to another town for junior high. The second, "Cosmonaut", finds him a senior in high school on the southern island of Tanegashima, where a classmate has feelings for him she has trouble finding the courage to express. The final, titular, episode rejoins Takaki as an adult in present-day Tokyo. This is the latest film from director Makoto Shinkai, so if you remember his previous works Voices of a Distant Star (which we showed in 2002) and The Place Promised in Our Early Days (which we showed in 2006), you have a good idea what you'll be getting: highly detailed and realistic backgrounds set against unrealistically beautiful skies, slow pacing, and idealistically un-confessed or unobtainable romantic longing. There are no sci-fi or fantasy elements here, though (a rocket launch is depicted, but it's just a metaphor), and the plot is minimal. 8:25 Le Chevalier D'Eon 19-24 ADVISORY: This series has some depictions of life like violence featuring a lot of blood. Well, it's pretty life like, as life like as zombie killing will ever be. Anyway, be warned that it might be a tad be messy at times. During the time when Louis XV still ruled France, a certain woman was found dead in the coffin floating through the Seine river. D'Eon, the woman's brother, determines to seach for the killer of his sister, Lia. But there are some strange movements in France. And things become more strange when Lia's soul enters D'Eon's body... 11:05 Candy Boy ONA, series episode 1 Kanade and Yukino Sakurai are fraternal twin sisters living on their own together and going to high school in Tokyo. They aren't quite lovers, but their relationship is more romantic than your typical pair of siblings. Will Sakuya Kamiyama, a freshman with a crush of her own and few compunctions about pursuing it, break them up? The original edition of Candy Boy was first released directly to the Internet (an "original net animation" or ONA), and then soon after as a bonus with the CD single for the ending theme by Korean artist Meilin. The anime took its name from the song, which explains the somewhat inappropriate title (no boys are to be seen, though there are plenty of sweets). It's now being followed by a series of 7 more planned episodes (schedule unannounced), the first of which we'll also be showing. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- (This showing is made possible in part with funding from Finboard and the Undergraduate Association of MIT.)
