See the next installments in the two semester series we showed two weeks ago. At MIT you can't fall behind or you'll never catch up. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Open Officer Positions Help make the club better! For the next month or so we will be looking to fill the positions which remain after elections. The one elected position which remains is: - Secretary To hold these positions, you must be an MIT student (undergraduate or graduate). In addition, there are a number of important appointed offices (industrial liaison(s), acquisitions, communications), along with many voluntary positions that help keep the club running, keep the showings happening, and keep the library functioning. This week's pizza options are: $1.50 Plain cheese $2.00 Pepperoni $2.00 Sausage (this week's feature flavor) Future weeks will feature: - Grilled Chicken - Hawaiian (ham + pineapple) - Hamburger - Sausage ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Pizza Ordering Procedure To bring you a more reliable pizza experience, we're going to be taking orders using a new procedure. Instead of taking a poll on the blackboard and then selling slices for cash, we'll sell tokens early in the evening which can be exchanged for slices during intermission. If there are extra slices, we'll sell tokens for them at intermission, but advance orders will get priority. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Library The library is open for checkouts again after our annual inventory. Please make sure that you have your request in by 5:00pm on Friday; requests received after that cutoff will not be honored. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Silence If the audience makes too much noise during the showing, a colony of "Un" mushi now living in Killian Court will be lured in and take up residence in your ear canals. To help us avoid this icky fate, please silence your electronics and refrain from conversation. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Programme 7:10 Gankutsuoh 5-8 Dumas' "The Count of Monte Cristo" transplanted to a future with cities on the moon. Despite the colorful pallette, it will appeal to your inner Goth. Absolutely stunning animation --- the clothes of many of the characters are treated as transparencies into various textures and images. As they move, the textures and images do not move in synch. This produces an odd, and I think interesting effect: in lit-crit mode, I might speculate that the disorienting effect it has on the audience mirrors the disoriented state of the callow young aristocrat getting his first taste of lunar decadence. Beautiful and innovative. 9:20 Mushi-Shi 5-8 Ginko is a mushishi --- an expert in "mushi", quasi-biological ectoplasmic creatures that come in a variety of unusual species. As he wanders through a rural Japan reminiscent of an earlier age, he tries to help people afflicted by mushi problems, with varying degrees of success. This anime adapts Yuki Urushibara's award-winning manga series, sticking quite close to the original stories but bringing the lush landscapes to life in vibrant color. The series has a distinctive atmosphere reminiscent of traditional Japanese folk takes, but also manages to stay fresh with a parade of creatures each weirder that the last. 11:05 Soul Eater 1-2 Students at the Shinigami Weapon Meister Vocational School are trained to wield "weapons" that are really demons who can take the form of either a human or a specific implement. Our female lead Maka Albarn works with the titular Soul Eater, who can also take the form of a big scythe. Together, they have to defeat and eat the souls of 99 evil people and a witch in order to increase their power for future evil busting. You could be forgiven for confusing this show with one of the dozens of others in the supernatural shonen action mold typified by Bleach and D.Gray-man, but the execution here is significantly better than average. The fights are flashy and fast-moving, as expected for the genre, but the main characters are atypically nuanced (without straying too far off-archetype). The art style is also unusual, smoothly mixing CG with relatively flat character designs in a deliberately cartoonish setting. (Perhaps the closest point of comparison for the art, though not an exact match, would be Tweeny Witches.) Based on the manga of the same name that graced the first cover of Hachette's new Yen Plus anthology, and animated as the 10th anniversary project of Studio Bones, who also did the series's Monthly Shonen Gangan companion and recent summer series Fullmetal Alchemist. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- (This showing is made possible in part with funding from Finboard and the Undergraduate Association of MIT.)
