If separated by 8.6 light-years, can two people still love each other? Makoto Shinkai presents his first animated feature: a tale of love and longing between two junior high classmates, Nagamine and Noboru. Nagamine is selected as a member of the advance army for Earth's extraterrestrial defense against the Tarsians, while Noboru gazes at the sky, thinking of her return. The only connection between the two is the mail link between their phones, and as Nagamine leaves the solar system, the speed of light makes their connection becomes ever more distant. Will their concern for one another end in tragedy, or will it become lost in the depths of space and time? Produced single-handed by the director on his Macintosh, originally voiced by the director and his fiancee, Hoshi no Koe is a masterpiece with style, heart, and a host of hidden references to other great anime works. |
