Nadja and I have co-host a radio show called Funky Monkey. This past fall we were on from 5-6 pm, and in the spring from 9-10 pm. We plan on hitting the airwaves once again in the fall when we return from Siberia. If you're in the Boston area, tune into to 88.1, we're the left-most station on the FM dial. WMBR's signal is broadcast all across Eastern Massachusetts. Everywhere else, check out the WMBR website to listen live. Why listen to Funky Monkey? We started off playing jazz fusion. Then we sort of expanded to include... well, pretty much everything. World, reggae, roots, rock, bluegrass, folk, dub, funk, jazz, experimental noise, soul, kid's songs, electronic music... you can't go wrong with old LPs, either. We do news, too. Our show has an extremely strong political overtone, and we frequently criticize the current Bush administration. Weird news is another one of our specialites. From the chubby, naked, barefoot man in Australia who managed to escape from a courthouse and outrun the police, to England's proposed female urinals consisting of pink cone-shaped plastic objects, to the man who had sex with a chicken in Cambodia (his wife then slaughtered the chicken), we cover it all. This spring, we’ve had live bands on our show nearly every week. The amazing guitarist Hara Garacci never fails to put on a stellar performance with his trios. Other guests have included Rob Mitzner's funky group Octopotamus, and the jazz improv band Gigawatt. Contact either me or Nadja if you would like to appear on the Funky Monkey. We like to give out free tickets. We actually enjoy it. And, we give out a pair of tickets almost every show. Be the first to call 617-253-8810 when we announce a giveaway! Is it your birthday? Are you in a band? We'll get you a stripper! Jeff Lieberman was in for a special birthday surprise when his band Gigawatt played on Funky Monkey. Apparently the stripper's car-navigational-system wasn't functioning properly, because she arrived thiry minutes after our show was supposed to be over. Jed of the Polyglot Spot kindly let us go over into his airtime, and the stripper finally arrived and did her thing - all on the air. Yes, she was hot. (The first question every guy asks). An excellent, high-quality recording of the entire show is available from Gigawatt's website.
