Using the BITBUCKET locker
What is BITBUCKET and how do I use it?
The bitbucket locker is temporarily unavailable. We apologize for any
inconvenience.
There is far more space available in temporary storage on your local
workstation than in the bitbucket locker, so you may wish to use that
for short-term storage of large files, such as data sets. (See the
"Using temporary storage on local disk" answer in the "Workstations"
topic for more information.)
You are strongly encouraged to use the temporary storage on workstations
for storing files, however please note that since the Athena root
password is available to every Athena user, you should also avoid
storing confidential or sensitive information there.
If you need additional storage for private data, you can contact Athena
User Accounts to obtain a quota increase, or you can archive the data to
CD-R or CD-RW discs. (See the "Making CD-R and CD-RW discs on Athena"
stock answer in the "Workstations" topic)
Historical Note: There used to be two lockers - the "bitbucket" locker,
which was an NFS locker, and the "bitbucket2" locker, which was an AFS
locker. In May 2003, the NFS locker was retired, and there is now the
bitbucket AFS locker. The "bitbucket2" locker is now a symbolic link to
the "bitbucket" locker - files can be accessed through either path.
Also note that when the locker was an NFS locker, it was possible to
protect files from being accessed by other users by use of the "chmod"
command. This is no longer the case. If you come across documentation
referring to the NFS bitbucket locker, please bring it to our attention
by e-mailing ostock@mit.edu.
