Accessing DIALUP EXPRESS

In an attempt to enhance dialup service at MIT, we have created an
additional service: Dialup Express. Dialup Express was designed to
give better performance to those users who want to just log in
briefly, especially to read or send mail.

Currently, under Dialup express, users are limited to 15 minutes of
connect time, and there is a maximum of 20 users per machine. When a
user is within 5 minutes of his maximum connect time, the user will
receive a three line banner message (complete with 'beeps' if the
terminal supports them) warning him that he has five minutes left.
The message will look like this:

        -----------------------------------------------
IN 5 MINUTES YOU WILL BE LOGGED OUT
        -----------------------------------------------

When there is one minute remaining, the user will get another, similar
message. Finally, immediately before a user is logged out, he will
get a one line message telling the user that he is being logged out.

Users can connect to Dialup Express by substituting
"express.dialup.mit.edu" in place of "athena.dialup.mit.edu" in your
SSH client or remote access software.

As with other dialup services, users should report bugs and send
comments to bug-dialup@mit.edu

Answers to common questions:

Q: What if I log in to an express machine twice?
A: When your earliest login hits the time limit, all of your logins on
a given machine will be ended. At the time limit, a user has used the
resources allotted to them, therefore all his/her logins are ended.

Q: What happens if I get the warning and log out and back in to the
same machine?
A: Your time limit will be reset. If express is in high demand (ie
the machines are at their max) you will not be allowed back in until
other users log out.

Q: It is 2 am, why do I have to be kicked off if there is no one else
trying to use express?
A: You don't. One of the features of express is that it only
automatically logs users out when the number of users is above a
'threshold'. A user can stay logged in until the number of users
exceeds the threshold. At that time (if it is longer than 15 minutes)
he/she will be given the 5 minute warning, and the rest of the
auto-logout procedure will continue as usual.
