Is there a public Linux dialup?
The athena.dialup.mit.edu pool of servers are all Sun Solaris-based
machines. IS&T does not provide any public Linux dialup servers.
Users who want remote access to an Athena Linux machine must either
set up their own private Athena workstation, or contact their
department, lab, or center and inquire about the availability of
private workstations or servers.
Users may also wish to explore SIPB's Debian Athena offerings and the
Linerva dialup server. These systems offer an environment that is
similar to Athena and should be able to run most Athena locker
software. Please be sure to read the following documents:
- A description of the Linerva service:
http://web.mit.edu/linerva/www/
- The differences between traditional Athena and Debian Athena:
http://debathena.mit.edu/athena-differences.html
Please note that Athena Consulting/OLC cannot currently provide
support for Debian Athena or Linerva. For assistance, you may contact
SIPB using the contact information listed on the web pages above, or
you may call their office at x3-7788. Please note that SIPB is a
volunteer student group, and their office hours may differ from those
of IS&T Client Support Services.
