Information about customizing DOTFILES

For information about customizing your session, please consult the
document "'Dotfiles': Customizing Your Athena Session".

You can pick up a free copy of this document at CopyTech in
11-004, or in the Athena Consulting Office (1st floor N42). Or you
can use the Athena On-Line Help system. Type the following command at
the athena% prompt:

	athena%  help

and then choose:

	+ Working with Configuration Files ("Dotfiles")

under the "Working on Athena" topic. This places you in the menu of
Dotfiles topics. Or, you can go directly to the URL:

        http://web.mit.edu/olh/Dotfiles/index.html

Before modifying your dotfiles, it may be helpful to look at the default
version of the dotfile you wish to modify. A list of some of these
default files follows:

	.cshrc      ---> /usr/prototype_user/.cshrc
	.login      ---> /usr/prototype_user/.login
	.mh_profile ---> /usr/prototype_user/.mh_profile

Note: these files should not be modified. However, if they become
corrupted somehow, you can always copy those default dotfiles to your
account. The following files are not necessary, but you may wish to
look at them as a basis for customizing your own:

	.zwgc.desc  ---> /usr/athena/share/zephyr/zwgc.desc

   on an SGI:
	.mwmrc      ---> /usr/lib/X11/system.mwmrc
	.twmrc      ---> /usr/lib/X11/twm/system.twmrc
	.Xresources ---> /usr/lib/X11/app-defaults/...

   on a Sun:
	.mwmrc      ---> /usr/openwin/lib/X11/system.mwmrc
	.twmrc      ---> /usr/openwin/lib/X11/twm/system.twmrc
	.Xresources ---> /usr/openwin/lib/X11/app-defaults/...

The latter directory (/usr/lib/X11/app-defaults on an SGI, or
/usr/openwin/lib/X11/app-defaults on a Sun) contains the default X
resources for a variety of X applications.

	Dash        ---> /usr/athena/lib/Dash.menus

This file contains the default description file for the Dash menu bar.
To actually use them, you would invoke Dash with the -menus option, or
use this:

	Dash*Menu.file:  filename

in your .Xresources file.
