Changing CHARACTER FORMATS

In order to change the format of a character, you can either choose
another format from the Character Catalog (click on the symbol that
looks like an S with a bar through it, or a curvy f, in the upper
right hand corner) or you can create your own and add it to the
catalog.

To create a new format, select Characters > Designer from the Format menu.
A new window will appear which will let you set the font, size, and any
other special options such as underline, overstrike, etc.

Once you have made your choices, select where you want to apply this
format. If you only want it applied to the current characters, and
you do not need the format again, then just select the Apply button
with the To Characters setting. If you want to use the format again,
then name the format in the upper left hand box, and choose the "New
Format" option from the Commands menu. This will open a dialog box
and allow you to store the format for future use and to apply it to
the current characters.

If you want a format applied to all characters in your document, you
should select the "Set Window To As Is" option on the Commands menu to
get into "As Is" mode. (Make sure that the cursor is not in text with
a particular character format, or only that format wil be selected.
If all your text is formatted, use the cursor to select text with more
than one format before selecting "Set Window to As Is". You want the
space under "Update All" to say "Characters" rather than "Formats
Tagged:".).

Now, change only the formatting for any options you want all
characters to possess: click on the Update All: button. A menu will
pop up; select "All Characters and Catalog Entries". ** Be extremely
careful when you use this option. **

To create a Greek letter, highlight the letter you want
to be Greek (hold down the left mouse button and drag it over the
letter). Then call up the Character Designer, either by holding down the
right mouse button in the FrameMaker window and choosing it from the
menu, or by choosing Characters->Designer from the Format menu. In the
Character Designer window, change the font Family to Symbol. Then click
on the Apply button. Voila, you have a Greek letter.
