How to ATTACH and mail a BINARY file
Sending binary files (ie: attachments) by e-mail on Athena
---------------- GRAPHICAL LOGIN SESSION --------------------
For a graphical login or X11 session, we recommend the Evolution
e-mail client. This client is run by default if you click the "Mail"
button in the panel at the bottom of the screen.
From the "Actions" menu, choose "Compose New Message". Fill in the
To, Subject, and Body of the message as normal. Then, from the
"Insert" menu, choose "Attachment...", and select the file(s) to
attach.
---------------- COMMAND-LINE or TTY LOGIN --------------------
From the command line, we recommend the use of the pine e-mail client.
To run pine, type "pine" at the athena% prompt.
Note: If this is your first time using pine, you will see a welcome
message. Press "E" to exit the welcome screen.
At the pine's main menu, press "C" to compose a message. After
filling out the "To" field, move the cursor down to the "Attchmnt"
field. With the curors in that field, press Ctrl-J to attach a file.
Pine will prompt you for the full path of the file to attach (ie:
/mit/joeuser/Images/picture.jpg). After you enter the file name, it
will prompt you for an "Attachment comment". This can be any short
text string (ie: "A picture of my family"), and it is used by certain
e-mail clients when the attachment cannot be displayed or for people
with different usability requirements (ie: braille terminals or screen
readers).
You can then move the cursor to the "Message Text" portion of the
screen, type your message, and press Ctrl-X to send it.
NMH users who do not wish to use pine may use the "exmh" client in the
sipb locker, but should note that support for exmh is provided by
SIPB, not IS&T, and that NMH is deprecated.
If you wish to compose a MIME message by hand, you can follow the
procedure below, but it has not been tested in several years and is
unsupported.
athena% add mime
athena% mailto
and then fill in the To: and Subject: fields. Once you've done that,
you can type in your message. When you want to include your binary file,
type in:
~*
and hit <Return>. This will ask you what type of file you want to
insert. You can hit "?" to get a list of the kinds of data it knows
about. If there isn't a specific entry for your type of file, just
choose "1" for "raw data from a file". You will then be prompted for a
filename.
If you chose "1" for the kind of data you will then be asked what to put
in for the "content-type" and you can type "?" to get a list of the ones
it knows about, or enter your own.
Once you've done that, put a "~." on a line by itself to send off the
message.
