How to use PINE for mail

You can use pine to read your mail on Athena.

Pine with IMAP support is available in the default release software on
Athena; pine which uses POP to download mail to your account is
available in the sipb locker. If you are using the SIPB version of
pine you may be able to get support from the SIPB.

Depending on how you have configured your acocunt, typing "pine" will
get you one version or the other. If you do 'add -f sipb' then you
will always get the sipb pine. To see which version of pine you will
get when you just run pine, type at the athena prompt 'where pine'.
If you get something that looks like this:

	athena% where pine
	/mit/sipb/.../bin/pine
	/usr/athena/bin/pine

-> You will run the SIPB version of pine. You can switch to
the release version by removing the SIPB locker from your path (add -r
sipb) or by changing your dotfiles so the release version of pine
appears first in your path. Contact Athena Consulting for help on how
to do this.

Otherwise, if it looks like this:

	athena% where pine
	/usr/athena/bin/pine

-> If you have not previously run PINE on Athena, or have a
file ~/.athena-pine-no-ask, you will run the release version of
pine. If you have a file ~/.athena-sipb-pine-noask, you will
run the SIPB version of pine. If you have neither, but have
previously run PINE on Athena, you will be given a choice of
        which version to run.

To run the SIPB version of pine (if you want to use POP for some
reason):

     athena% athrun sipb pine

The IMAP version of pine will leave your mail on the server, and look
at the messages there. IMAP allows you to read your mail from
multiple clients, and mail on the servers has a separate quota from
the quota in your account.

The POP version of pine will download your mail off of the mail
servers, and save it to your Athena account in the ~/mail directory,
in pine format. You should note that people have reported data lossage
when nearing the limits of their AFS quota.

To access help while in pine press the "?" key. For general
documentation on pine see http://www.washington.edu/pine/

To report bugs in the pine installation on Athena, please send
mail to bugs@mit.edu. If you are using the SIPB version, please send
mail to bug-sipb@mit.edu. Please see above for information on how to
determine which version you are running.
