Why didn't my file print?
If you send a file to the printer and it fails to print, try the following:
1. Log in to Athena and type lpq -Pprintername and see what the queue looks
like.
A normal queue will look something like this:
Printer: sanda@paper-pusher 'HP8100 4-167'
Queue: 6 printable jobs
Server: pid 11699 active
Unspooler: pid 24681 active
Status: printing data file 'dfA356m4-167-3.mit.edu' at 15:41:17.184
Filter_status: 14 percent done at 15:41:45.772
Rank Owner/ID Class Job Files Size Time
active username@m4-167-3+356 A 356 /tmp/AcrocPaWJe 6589407 15:13:16
2 username@m4-167-8+902 A 902 (stdin) 25757 15:23:43
3 username@m4-167-8+908 A 908 (stdin) 27579 15:24:12
4 username@m4-167-1+774 A 774 (stdin) 24158 15:35:59
NOTE: If the queue looks like the one below, the "stalled" message
before the first job doesn't necessarily mean anything is wrong, it
might mean the printer is just processing the job. If it's been
stalled for more than 5-10 minutes and no pages are actually being
printed and the "filter_status" line doesn't have an increasing
percentage done (as shown above), look for a physical problem with the
printer as described in the next steps.
Printer: printername@paper-pusher 'HP5SI green'

Unspooler: pid 25006 active

2. If the printer panel says "Power Save" or "Warming Up" and has for
a while turn the printer off and then on again (the power button is
located below the display panel.) You would also see the "Power Save"
or "Warming Up" message in the "Filter_status" field after typing lpq
-Pprintername.
3. If the printer panel has any other obvious error messages like
"Paper Jam", "Tray 2 Paper Out", etc, please attempt to fix the
problem. If you can't fix the problem please send email to
hotline@mit.edu and someone will come and look at it.
4. If you can't find a physical problem, and the job has been stalled
for more than 5-10 minutes, either ask the user to remove the job or
call Athena Consulting at 3-4435 and ask them to remove the print job
for you.
5. If it is a pdf file and it seems to just 'disappear' from the
queue without actually printing (the printer lights blink, then stop
and nothing prints). You may wish to try checking the box in the
print dialog for acrobat under "Postscript Option" that says "Level 2
Only"
