Why don't Zip drives work on 9.2 machines?

Why don't Zip drives work?

Support for Zip drives was accidentally broken when Athena 9.2 was
released. The 9.2.15 patch release for Sun machines should fix this
problem. All public machines should be running 9.2.15 as of August 5,
2003. To see what version of Athena you are running, do this:

athena% tail -1 /etc/athena/version

Zip drives on Linux machines are still not working as of Athena 9.2.15.
It is expected that a future patch release will fix this problem. This
stock answer will be updated when that is the case.

Regardless, Zip drives may not be supported in future Athena releases
(ie: 9.3 and above), and users should investigate using CD-R or CD-RW as
an alternative to store large files. Please see our stock answer on
making CD-R and CD-RW discs in the "Workstations" category.
