How to change your FINGER INFORMATION
There are several ways to change the information that is displayed about you
when someone types:
finger username
The information like:
Login name: joeuser In real life: Joe User
Office: 4-082 MIT, x3-0000 Home phone: 225-0000
Directory: /mit/joeuser Shell: /bin/csh
can be changed by typing "chfn" at the athena% prompt. You will be
prompted for the new information; it will take a day or two to be
updated.
The next line, either "Not currently locatable" or something like
"On since Wed Jul 22 10:23:28 1998 on 51 on host cathedral-seven.MIT.EDU"
is taken from the zephyr servers; if you do not want to be located in
this fashion, you need to set your zephyr exposure to hidden (see the
stock answer under
ZEPHYR Answers
HIDING from other users
for more information).
The other information that is displayed is contained in two files in
your home directory called ".project" and ".plan". The .project file
must be one line, while your .plan can be as long as you want. These can
contain any information you want. To let other people read your .plan
and .project files after creating them, you should change to your home
directory and type:
mv .plan ~/Public
ln -s ~/Public/.plan ~/.plan
For .project files, do the same thing substituting .project for .plan. In
order for someone else to see this information when they finger you, they
must have your home directory attached by typing "attach username".
Unfortunately, there is no way to have your plan or project information
printed when somebody fingers you by doing "finger username@athena".
In addition, every modification made to your .plan file causes it to be
automatically posted to the general athena community through the
Central_America discuss meeting. To learn more information about
discuss, use OLH, choose "Communicating with Other Users," and then
choose "Discussion Lists." If you would like to have your .plan file
NOT posted to the above meeting, send mail to ca-maintainers@mit.edu .
If you'd like to change the information that comes up when you type:
finger username@mit
you should contact the Registrar's office, if you're a student. If
you're a staff member, you'll need to contact the Personnel office.
You can find out more information about this by typing:
finger "help change-info"@mit.edu
