Getting access to UNIX SOURCE FILES

If you would like to see the source code to Athena and the Unix system, there
are several things you can do. First:

	attach source
	cd /mit/source

The file "FILES" in that directory lists all the files that make up the Athena
system. Although that lists all the files we have, there are some that are
not accessible to the general user due to license restrictions. If you can't
access the file, there are several alternatives:

If you cannot find what you want, try these options:

- for gnu source (gcc, g++, emacs ...):

	attach gnu
(and then look in /mit/gnu/src for some of the sources.)
	ftp to prep.ai.mit.edu

- for public parts of the bsd source:
	ftp ftp.uu.net
	   (in the packages/bsd-sources directory)

	cd /afs/athena/astaff/reference/4.3network2
(look around there -- check the README file)

- for archives of comp.sources.x, comp.sources.unix, ...
	ftp ftp.uu.net
(in the directory with the same name)

If all this fails, and you would still like to get at some of the sources we
have that are not publically readable, please enter a question in OLC, and
give us the following information:

- What source do you want access to?
- For what reason do you want the source?
- Where you be using this source? (athena, mit, UROP, other job)

The consultant you will be connected to most likely will not be able to
directly give you access; you will get a response to your request in several
working days.
