Common FLOPPY ERRORS
Here are some common error messages and probable causes:
/dev/fd0: Device not ready
Cannot open /dev/fd0 for input. /dev/fd0 is the device name for
the floppy drive. It might mean that you are trying to use the
wrong device.
tar: tape read error: I/O error
sd2:HARD ERROR: Drive select failed
Disk not inserted in drive
/dev/fd0: Unformatted or incompatible media
unknown diskette type f6
DOS command tried on unformatted disk
unknown diskette type f6
DOS command tried on disk formatted for tar only
tar: /dev/rfd0: Unformatted or incompatible media
Tar command tried on unformatted disk
tar: directory checksum error (0 != XXXXXX)
Tar command tried on DOS formatted disk
Tar command tried on blank tar formatted disk
format: diskette bad or incompatible
Tried formatting a DD disk instead of a HD disk
Disk is otherwise damaged or corrupted
sd0:HARD ERROR
Disk is bad; try another disk
Disk drive is bad/misaligned; try another workstation
Segmentation Violation
If you get this error WHEN USING MTOOLS, then it is most likely
you have entered a badly formatted directory name. To fix it,
type "rm ~/.mcwd" at your athena% prompt.
