How to USE HEADPHONES to listen to audio

On a SUN workstation:

1. Plug in headphones

2. Start the audio control panel with the command 'sdtaudiocontrol &'
and switch output to 'Headphone' instead of 'Speaker'.
Future sounds will now be played through the headphones for
this login session. The audio control panel also controls
   the volume.

(Note: The command name has changed - on Sun workstations running
Athena 9.1 or earlier, it was "audiocontrol"

On a Linux workstation:

1. Plug in headphones

2. Use the volume control on the audio/video player.

On the new HP/Compaq workstations, you will need to use the command
'aumix' to control the volume levels. Unfortunately, the appropriate
channels are mis-labeled; 'pcm2' controls the headphone volume, and
'PhoneOut' controls the volume of the internal speaker.

General note: Some systems (both the Linux and SUN workstations) have
a headphone jack on the face plate of the CD drive. This is
_not_ the correct headphone jack for most applications. (It is
only the correct headphone jack if you are listening to audio
CD's.) The correct headphone jack will be either in the cut-out area
on the front near the USB ports, or in the back of the machine.

If you're not sure where to find the headphone jack, consult

for a set of diagrams.
