REBOOTING a workstation
If you need to reboot a workstation, either because it has frozen or because
it has been locked for more than 20 minutes, just follow the instructions
below. If you encounter any trouble, please either contact a consultant, or
report the problem to the Athena Hardware Hotline (x3-1410).
Current Athena Workstations
===========================
To reboot a Sun:
The preferred method of rebooting a Sun is to become root
athena% su
(type athena% tellme root
if you are in an Athena cluster and don't know the root
password. If you are using a machine in a private office or
cluster, you should check with the appropriate cluster manager.)
and then
% reboot
If the machine is hung to an extent that you cannot do this,
try the following:
Hold down the "stop" key (on the left of the keyboard) and
press "a" at the same time. Then, at the "ok" prompt, type
"boot".
To reboot a Linux PC:
Locally:
If the X display is frozen, you might first want to try resetting
it. Hold down control, alt, and press backspace. Note: this
procedure will log out whoever is using the X display.
If you actually wish to reboot the machine for any particular
reason, you have two options. The first is to login and become
root to reboot the machine; this is described below. The other
option is simpler: hold down control and alt, and press F1. The
screen should switch to text mode. Now hold down control and alt
and press Delete. The machine should begin its shutdown procedure
immediately.
If the machine is hung such that the above does not work, you
can hit the reset button which is below the power button on
the front of the case.
If all those methods fail, please contact the Hardware Hotline by
calling x3-1410 or sending mail to "hotline@mit.edu".
While logged in (even remotely):
To become root, use the command 'su'. This will, of course,
require the root password. As root, type the following:
shutdown -r now
If the -r is replaced with a -h, the machine will halt instead of
rebooting. Note that this will log out anyone using the machine.
The preferred method of rebooting a Linux PC is to hold down
the control and alt keys and hit the F1 key. Then wait a few
seconds for a text screen to appear. Finally, hold the
control and alt keys and hit the delete key. This will
perform an ordered shutdown and reboot.
Desupported Athena Platforms
============================
To reboot an SGI:
The preferred method of rebooting an SGI workstation is to select
System/Restart System from the "toolchest" menu. That will
require the root password.
After selecting System/Restart System from the "toolchest"
menu, the system will prompt you for the root password.
Alternately, instead of using the menu, you can type "su" at
the prompt, enter the root password when prompted, and then
type "reboot"
If you can't do either of those, press the power button (the round
button next to the red/green power light). On SGIs, this will do an
orderly shutdown and turn off the machine. Once the machine shuts off,
wait 30 seconds and press it again to turn it back on and boot.
After rebooting the machine, wait for the "Hit any key to start"
message and start again as usual. If the machine won't reboot, call
the Hardware Hotline at x3-1410.
To reboot a DECstation 5000/25 (Maxine):
Press the Ctrl, Alt, and Return keys at the same time. (This will
drop you into the ROM monitor.) Then press the Ctrl, Alt, and
Backspace keys simultaneously, and that will start the autoboot
sequence.
To reboot a DECstation 5000/133:
Press the small square gray button above two slashes, directly to
the right of a display with red lights, located at the back of the
machine. This should start the autoboot sequence automatically;
if it doesn't, press the button again.
To reboot a Dec 5000/120:
There is a small gray button sticking out of the back of the
workstations, about 1/3 over from the right side (when facing
the monitor and reaching around on the right).
Hitting the button allows you to type "boot" at the >>> prompt
To reboot a DECstation3100:
Press the Halt button, which is a small grey button under a symbol
of an inverted triangle within a circle, located on the back
of the machine near the right side. It's to the left of a
T-shaped ethernet connector, which has wires leading out of it.
You'll see a >> prompt after you do this; type auto and a return
after this to restart.
To reboot an RS/6000:
There are two options. To just reset the Xserver, you can press
Ctrl-Alt-Backspace. That will not reboot the workstation
completely, just reset it.
If that does not fix your problem, then press the yellow reset
button. On the newer RS6000's, this button is accessed by
opening the cover on the front (there is an indentation where
you can put a finger nail so you can pull the cover down).
To reboot a VAXstation 2000:
Press the Halt button, which is a small white button under the
top rear edge of the system's cabinet. You'll see a >>> prompt
after you do this; type B and a return to restart.
To reboot a VAXstation 3100:
Press the Halt button, which is a small grey button under a symbol
of an inverted triangle within a circle, located on the back
of the machine near the right side. It's to the left of a
T-shaped ethernet connector, which has wires leading out of it.
You'll see a >>> prompt after you do this; type B and a return
to restart.
To reboot an RT/PC:
Press the Ctrl, Alt and Pause keys at the same time. Press the
Return key when you see a prompt on the screen.
