Common ZIP DISK errors
As of Athena 9.2, Zip drives are being phased out. While support for
existing Zip drives will continue for the short term, broken zip
drives will not be replaced. For storage of large files, we recommend
using recordable compact discs. For more information, see our stock
answer "Making CD-R and CD-RW discs on Athena" in the "Workstations"
category.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Can't eject: if "eject zip" or "mzip -e z:" doesn't eject the disk,
hold down the button on the drive for a few seconds.
Flashing lights: when you insert or eject a disk, or copy files to or
from the zip disk, the light on the drive will blink several times to
indicate activity; wait until the flashing stops before proceeding.
If it flashes continuously when you are not reading or writing to the
disk, try manually ejecting it, waiting a few seconds, and reinserting
the disk.
Clicking noises: a click or two is normal when you insert, eject, read
or write to a zip disk. Continuous clicking may be a sign of a
damaged disk or drive. If the problem recurs after ejecting and
reinserting the disk and other drives don't display this problem,
please report it to hotline.
-------------------- Sun errors: --------------------
I/O Errors from mcopy: use "mzip -q z:" to check whether the disk is
write-protected or password-protected.
Zip disks are now controlled by Volume Management on the Suns. If you
get the error:
Can't open /vol/dev/aliases/zip0: No such file or directory
Cannot initialize 'Z:'
First try manually ejecting the disk, waiting a few seconds, and
reinserting it. If that doesn't work, check to make sure vold is
running:
ps -ef | grep vold
If it's not, restart it:
add consult
voldstart
and try again.
