Gnome-WARNING upon LOGIN; no PANEL or TERMINAL WINDOW
If you log in at a Sun machine, find yourself without a panel or an
xterm, and get the messages:
Gnome-WARNING **: Could not create per-user Gnome directory
</afs/athena.mit.edu/user/u/s/username/.gnome>
Gnome-WARNING **: Could not create private per-user Gnome directory
</afs/athena.mit.edu/user/u/s/username/.gnome_private>
Gnome-WARNING **: Could not create per-user Gnome directory
</afs/athena.mit.edu/user/u/s/username/.gnome/accels>
you are over your Athena quota. The error messages indicate that
Gnome is unable to write to your home directory.
To fix this problem, you will need to get under your quota. Since you
can't log in normally on Sun machines, you will need to log in with
the "Terminal-style session" option under "Login Options" on the login
screen, or log in to a Linux machine instead.
Once you've logged in, you can follow the instructions at
http://web.mit.edu/answers/accounts/accounts_get_below.html to get
below your quota. Alternatively, if you need more quota, follow the
instructions at
http://web.mit.edu/answers/accounts/accounts_increase.html
