Using zephyr with people at OTHER SCHOOLS
It is possible to zephyr people at some other schools and organizations,
including, in particular, Carnegie Mellon University. For example, if
the other person is in the zephyr realm ANDREW.CMU.EDU, you can send him
a zephyr by typing zwrite username@ANDREW.CMU.EDU, and he can respond
back with zwrite username@ATHENA.MIT.EDU. A full explanation of the
situation follows below.
You can also use the Unix "talk" command to converse with users on
other Unix systems. To find more information on the "talk" command
please refer to the stock answer under NETWORKS. Alternately, you can
use "gaim" to communicate with users of AIM, ICQ, Yahoo Messenger, MSN
Messenger, Jabber, and IRC. For more information on using gaim, please
see the stock answer "How can I use AOL Instant Messenger (AIM), ICQ,
MSN Messenger, or Yahoo Messenger on Athena?" under NETWORKS.
Zephyr is divided into realms (sometimes called galaxies). Each
zephyr realm has a native kerberos realm. Zephyr realms can be set up
to allow subscriptions from each other by having the zephyr servers
talk to each other. Some common zephyr realms that talk to each other
(by kerberos domain):
ATHENA.MIT.EDU ANDREW.CMU.EDU CLUB.CC.CMU.EDU CS.CMU.EDU DEMENTIA.ORG
IASTATE.EDU SNURGLE.ORG
You can use zstat to figure out which server (and therefore realm) a
given machine is talking to and which other realms that server knows
about.
One thing to note is that "inter-realm" zephyr communication is not
transitive. Even though ATHENA.MIT.EDU communicates with
CLUB.CC.CMU.EDU, and CLUB.CC.CMU.EDU communicates with
EECS.HARVARD.EDU, ATHENA.MIT.EDU and EECS.HARVARD.EDU users cannot
send personal messages to each other. joe@ATHENA.MIT.EDU
can't send a zephyr to bob@EECS.HARVARD.EDU either directly, or via
CLUB.CC.CMU.EDU
