Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology can be used for scientific investigations, resource management, and city and regional planning. Our GIS software is manufactured by Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI ). We have Arcinfo, the industrial strength GIS, Arcview, a user friendly desktop interface GIS, and SDE, the Spatial Database Engine. SDE works with Arcview and Arcinfo to deliver data to users.
ArcExplorer 4.0 is available on Athena for Linux and Sun (by typing: add arcims; aejava).
Arcinfo 9.2 is the default version on Athena (i.e., this is the version obtained by typing: add arcinfo; arcinfo).
Arcview 3.3 is the default version on Athena (i.e., this is the version obtained by typing add arcview; arcview). This product has apparently been discontinued on UNIX platforms. This is the last version we received, in 2003.
SDE clients are available through ArcInfo 9.2
General usage information can be found in the What Runs Where listing.
ESRI products are the officially supported GIS packages for the MIT Athena Computing Environment. By "officially supported" we mean:
