DNS Technical Information

You will be coordinating the DNS changes yourself. If you can run two name servers, a graceful transition can occur. A typical scenario would follow the above procedure where Exodus takes over all your DNS while you move. Register your name server’s new IP address with the Internic and move the name server to Exodus. Notify Exodus when your NS becomes active and we will remove your DNS zone files from our NS.

If Exodus will be the authoritative primary Name Server

If you are currently live, will you be able to run the old site in parallel with new servers at Exodus for a ‘graceful’ transition?

When will you send Exodus your Zone files?

When should Exodus enter them (Date & morn/night)?

When will you inform Internic of Your NS change?

When will you inform your Previous NS provider?

When will you send Exodus the Updated zone file?

When will you move your servers?

When should Exodus enter the new IP addresses?

Notes:

IP addresses must have reverse DNS (in-addr.arpa) pointer (PTR) records. If Exodus is master DNS or if you have less than a /24 (255 addresses) we need a list of your Fully-Qualified-Domain-Names and their Exodus IP addresses. Please fill in the names of your domains below (expand list as necessary):

Host.Domain.Top-level-domain IP Address

At your option, Exodus can act as a slave (secondary) name server for your master (primary) name server.

Please fill in the Fully-Qualified-Domain-Names to slave below (expand list as necessary):

DNS Technical Information

When you register or change your Domains with the Internic, list the following server and IP information on your registration:

If Exodus is your authoritative DNS custodian and maintains your zone file, you will use both of the Exodus name servers below:

Exodus Master (Primary) NS:

SCA03.AUTH.DNS.EXODUS.NET

IP Addr:

209.185.253.230

Exodus Slave (Secondary) NS:

SCA04.AUTH.DNS.EXODUS.NET

IP Addr:

216.32.104.10

If you have your own authoritative (master-primary) name server, and you want Exodus to provide a slave name server, use:

Exodus Slave (Secondary) NS:

SCA02.SEC.DNS.EXODUS.NET

IP Addr:

209.1.235.120

If you have your own master name server, and you want Exodus to provide a slave name server, but you still want to list Exodus as your authoritative DNS custodian with the Internic, use:

Exodus Slave (Primary) NS:

SCA02.SEC.DNS.EXODUS.NET

IP Addr:

209.1.235.120

Exodus Slave (Secondary) NS:

SCA03.SEC.DNS.EXODUS.NET

IP Addr:

216.32.126.150

Regardless of your DNS setup, you can always use these Internet resolving recursive name servers to lookup addresses in the Internet:

How to Make a DNS Requests

Customers occasionally email their Project Manager or individual NOC Engineers with DNS requests. If this happens, simply forward the email message to support@exodus.net for processing. All DNS requests must be submitted to support@exodus.net for processing, with DNS Request in the "Subject" Line of the email message.

Customers making new domain requests may also go to www.exodus.net, click on the Support Tab, select DNS Submission, and complete the online form. When this form is submitted, it generates an email to support@exodus.net.

DNS Technical Information

If Exodus will be the authoritative master (primary) name server, a typical scenario is:

  1. Email your DNS zone files for your domains to support@exodus.net. Get these zone files from the current custodian of your Domain Name (DNS) provider.
  2. Exodus will enter these zone files into our authoritative name server (usually SCA03.AUTH.DNS.EXODUS.NET) as master and slave (usually SCA04.AUTH.DNS.EXODUS.NET) containing your current IP addresses with a very short Time-To-Live interval.
  3. After the zone files at Exodus become active (noon and midnight PST) you will request to have your Domain Name modified by sending an email to hostmaster@networksolutions.com.
  4. Technical Contact: Use assigned NIC Handle: NOC44 (Exodus network engineering)

If Exodus is your authoritative DNS custodian and maintains your zone file, you will use both of the Exodus name servers below:

    Exodus Master (Primary) NS:

    SCA03.AUTH.DNS.EXODUS.NET

    IP Addr:

    209.185.253.230

    Exodus Slave (Secondary) NS:

    SCA04.AUTH.DNS.EXODUS.NET

    IP Addr:

    216.32.104.10

If you have your own authoritative (master-primary) name server, and you want Exodus to provide a slave name server, use:

    Exodus Slave (Secondary) NS:

    SCA02.SEC.DNS.EXODUS.NET

    IP Addr:

    209.1.235.120

If you have your own master name server, and you want Exodus to provide a slave name server, but you still want to list Exodus as your authoritative DNS custodian with the Internic, use:

    Exodus Slave (Primary) NS:

    SCA02.SEC.DNS.EXODUS.NET

    IP Addr:

    209.1.235.120

    Exodus Slave (Secondary) NS:

    SCA03.SEC.DNS.EXODUS.NET

    IP Addr:

    216.32.126.150

  5. The Internic responds with a long EMail including below:
  6. ‘Updates for the domain shown below have been completed. If the domain was updated before 18:00 Eastern Standard Time on a business day, the domain name will be included in today’s root server update - about 22:00 Eastern Standard Time. Otherwise, it will be in the root server update for the following business day. The domain name record will be visible via "whois" tomorrow morning…

  7. After you have verified by "whois" that the change has been made, notify your original Domain Name custodian that Exodus is now your DNS custodian, and they can remove your Domain Name records.
  8. At this point Exodus has control of your DNS in our name server and Exodus is your Domain Name custodian.
  9. This new information (Exodus as the authoritative NS and the short TTL) will propagate across the Internet’s name servers taking from 1 hour to a few days depending on the DNS settings of other providers.
  10. When most of the Internet’s name servers are updated, it is time to move your servers.
  11. Update your copy of your DNS zone file indicating which new Exodus IP addresses are to be substituted for the original addresses and any other updates you require and send it by Email to your project manager.
  12. We enter your new IP addresses and a very short TTL into your DNS either before or after you physically have your servers at our site. Your site will be down unless you leave a server at your old site providing a ‘graceful’ transition. The length of down time is determined by how long it takes to physically move and setup servers at Exodus and the propagation delay.
