It looks like a French site announced this mail already, and the Linux
Weekly News picked up on it.

This release is *NOT* yet ready. Please wait a week, and we'll actually
send out the mail and such.

Thank you.

Subject: Independence 5.2-0.1 distribution ready
--------
Project Independence has released version 0.1 of its distribution, which
is based from Red Hat Linux 5.2. Designed for the home end-user,
Independence is an integrated collection of RPMs that aims to make Linux
easier, more powerful, and simpler to use for everybody.

Features include:

* Linux must be easy: we allow a plug and play (zero config) installation
of KDE, font servers (True Type) and widget specific resources.

* We include networking clients suitable for a computer that connects
intermittently via a PPP connection, that enable the user to minimize
online time. More importantly, the networking software is easy to use
and configure: easy networking is critical for people needing help with
  configuration or applications.

* Linux must be fun and fascinating: we added a few games, a modeller
  and a raytracer.

* Linux must be useful: as long as the user is forced to reboot in
order to manage his checkbook, Linux will remain only a toy. We
  added software for everyday life.

* High quality Postscript viewing out of the box (no longer nearly
  unreadable docs), SANE.

Plans for future releases include:

* Providing simple and effective alternatives to traditional mail and news
  servers.

* A complete GIMP: one with every plugin available.

* Complete plug and play networking with automatic routing of mail
and news, and with caching servers for shorter connections.

* Replacing cron: it is unfit for boxes powered off at night.

* More games and educational software.

All software developed by Independence is licensed under the GPL, and the
Independence distribution is freely redistributable. Independence is
developed by a completely volunteer team with no intention of getting
any money -- we hope to convince other distributions to adopt our
changes, and thus improve the Linux system as a whole.
Please take a look at this initial distribution, test it out, and send us
your comments. Since the changes right now are only new RPMs, it should be
able to be installed manually, or by pointing your RH52 install floppy
at ftp://ftp.independence.seul.org/pub/independence/RPMS/

The distribution is available from
ftp://ftp.independence.seul.org/pub/independence/

and more information lives here:

Thanks, and we look forward to your feedback and help.
