United States Army Lieutenant Colonel Leo R. McGonagle, a native of Boston, MA assumed his present position as the Professor of Military Science and Leadership at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in July 2005. His first assignment in uniform began in 1989 when he served as a Platoon Leader in C Company, 326th Engineer Battalion, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault). He received a commission into the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers through ROTC at Boston University as a Distinguished Military Graduate in 1988.
Lieutenant Colonel McGonagle has served in a variety of leadership positions since his commissioning. They include: Battalion Executive Officer of the 52nd Engineer Battalion (Combat) and of the 1st Battalion 361st Engineer Regiment, and as Regimental Engineer of the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, all at Fort Carson, CO. He served as a Company Commander, Brigade S1, and Assistant Brigade Operations Officer in the 1st Armored Division Engineer Brigade in Germany, and as a Company Tactical Officer at the United States Military Academy. He also served as a Combat Engineer Sapper Platoon Leader and Aide de Camp while assigned to the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) at Fort Campbell, KY.
Lieutenant Colonel McGonagle holds a Masters of Science Degree in Leadership Development and Counseling from Long Island University, and a BA Degree from Boston University. He is a graduate of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College and the Command and Staff Services School. He has deployed and participated in support of contingencies to include Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF), Implementation Force (IFOR) Peace Enforcement Operations in Bosnia-Herzegovina, and in Operation’s Desert Shield and Storm.
His military decorations include the Bronze Star with two oak leaf clusters, the Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, and the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary and Service Medals. Lieutenant Colonel McGonagle has earned the Army Aviator Badge, Air Assault Badge, the Parachutist Badge, and the Ranger Tab.
