Office of the Arts
The Office of the Arts is the central administrative arts headquarters
at MIT, established to oversee, coordinate, support, and facilitate
arts activities for the Institute. Creative expression is a logical
outgrowth of the Institute's motto, mens et manus ("mind and
hand"). The arts at MIT are rooted in risk-taking and problem-solving,
connecting creativity across boundaries, anad shaping a lifetime
of exploration and discovery. Murals and musicals, paintings and
poems, drag and dance, origami and oration, gamelan concerts and
gallery shows are all part of MIT's creative environment. Headed
by the Associate Provost, the Office works to:
- support the arts at MIT, and sponsor a number of programs specially
designed to encourage students in their artistic endeavors;
- advance the continuing integration of the creative and performing
arts into the MIT community;
- facilitate communication, outreach, and participation between MIT and the Greater Boston community;
- promote cultural affirmation through the arts.
Under the direction of the Associate Provost, the Office of the Arts oversees, supports
and promotes arts activities on campus through its three branches:
Arts Communication, the Council for
the Arts at MIT, and Student & Artist-in-Residence
Programs, which includes the Student Art Association, offering
extra-curricular classes and facilities in traditional visual arts.
