Committees
The Council for the Arts administers its various programs through a number of standing and prize committees. Following is a list with a brief description of each Committee.
Standing Committees
The Annual Meeting Committee plans and organizes the Council's Annual Meeting at which the Eugene McDermott Award and the Gyorgy Kepes Fellowship Prize are presented. Each year the Council plans the Annual Meeting to highlight one of the six arts disciplines taught at MIT: Writing, Architecture, Music, Visual Arts, Theater, and Media Arts. The Annual Meeting generally takes place on the last Thursday and Friday of October. This committee is made up only of Council Members.
The Artist-in-Residence Advisory Board acts in an advisory capacity to the Director of Student & Artist-in-Residence Programs of the Office of the Arts, who oversees the AIR Program. This committee is made up of Council Members, MIT faculty and staff, and outside arts professionals.
The Arts Scholars Selection Committee meets with applicants to the Council for the Arts at MIT Arts Scholars Program. This committee, made up of Council Members and MIT faculty and staff, interviews applicants, then meets to choose the year's Arts Scholars.
The Communications Committee writes and produces the newsletter Council Currents, published three times annually, for distribution to all Council members and specified affiliates. This committee is made up of Council members and MIT staff.
The Development Committee secures financial resources for the operations and programs of the Council. The committee coordinates its activities with those of MITís Resource Development offices. This committee is made up only of Council Members.
The Executive Committee is made up of the chairmen of all Council committees. Among its responsibilities is determining the annual budget of the Council and the programs and projects to be funded. The Executive Committee will apportion the annual budget to these programs and projects. This committee is made up only of Council Members.
The Grants Committee meets three times annually to review requests for funding submitted by individuals or groups at MIT in accordance with the guidelines of the program. Upon evaluation of these requests, the committee authorizes funding. The Grants Committee also meets once a year to discuss Grants Program policies and practices. This committee is made up only of Council Members.
The List Visual Arts Center Advisory Board acts in an advisory capacity to the Director of the List Visual Arts Center. This committee is made up of Council Members, MIT students, MIT faculty and staff, and outside arts professionals.
The Membership Committee develops membership policies and criteria for appointments to the Council. The committee approves new members, and presents the names to the Executive Committee. This committee is made up only of Council Members.
The MIT Museum Advisory Board acts in an advisory capacity to the Director of the MIT Museum. This committee is made up of Council Members, MIT faculty and staff, and outside arts professionals.
The Special Events Committee coordinates and executes special Council events with other members of the Council and arts communities throughout the country. This committee is made up only of Council Members.
Prize Committees
The Student Art Awards Committee meets once a year to select the recipients of the awards described below. This committee is made up only of Council Members.
Louis Sudler Prize in the Arts
The Sudler Prize in presented annually to a graduating senior.
Laya and Jerome B. Wiesner Student Art Awards
At least two Wiesner awards are presented annually to individual students or student groups.
The Gyorgy Kepes Fellowship Prize Committee meets by telephone, fax, and email once annually to select a member of the MIT community whose contributions to the arts, in a particular field, have proven invaluable to the community. This committee is made up of Council Members, MIT faculty and staff, and outside arts professionals.
The Eugene McDermott Award in the Arts Selection Committee meets three or four times annually to choose an artist, from outside MIT, who has demonstrated excellence in the creative arts. The make-up of this committee changes each year, to include those with special expertise in the arts discipline featured in a particular year. This committee can be made up of Council Members, MIT students, faculty, staff, and outside arts professionals.
