Associate Provost
The position of Associate Provost for the Arts was created in 1989 as the final fulfillment of a set of recommendations made in November 1987 by
the Arts Review Committee headed by Paul L. Joskow, professor of economics. Professor Ellen T. Harris, professor of music,
held the post from 1989-1995. Her successor, Professor Alan Brody, Class of 1960 Fellow for 1993-95, had been chair of
the Music and Theater Arts Section in the School of Humanities and Social Science since 1990. Brody held the post from
1995-2006. On July 1, 2006, Philip S. Khoury, the Kenan Sahin Dean of the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences,
became Associate Provost. (See News Office

The Associate Provost is the senior administration official responsible for the oversight of creative
arts activities throughout the Institute. A member of the Academic Council, the Associate Provost advises
the Provost and the President on all non-academic activities related to the arts and is the senior officer responsible
for resource development in the arts. The Associate Provost chairs the Creative Arts Council, which consists
of the dean of the School of Humanities and Social Science, the dean of the School of Architecture and Planning, and
department heads and leaders of programs in the arts.
