The Arts at MIT
Spend a few hours at MIT, and you'll begin to see the huge and pervasive role that the arts play in
the life of the Institute. You'll encounter monumental works of modern and contemporary sculpture throughout
the campus, and hear musicians practicing and performing in our residences, practice rooms and recital
halls. You'll see posters for exhibits and readings, and encounter websites for dance troupes. At MIT the
arts—once almost invisible—are now joyfully and utterly inescapable.
If you're interested in the arts, you'll be in excellent company at MIT; more than 60% of our incoming
freshmen are already involved. (There's no need to leave your trumpet at home.) You'll have the chance to
study with a Pulitzer Prize winner, MacArthur scholar, or National Book Award nominee. Our faculty is
deeply caring. They encourage students to think and work creatively in all aspects of their lives.
This holds especially true for the arts, which express the diversity of the MIT community more than
any other discipline. There's strong support for involvement with the arts throughout that community,
and a shared belief that writing, singing, acting and sculpting enhance our students' passion for the
work they do in the lab, the classroom, and the observatory.
MIT gives you the opportunity to discover and explore the arts without a fear of judgment or failure.
We'll give you the space to experience constant astonishment - to connect your head with the rest of your
body, and your intellect with your emotions. While most of our students don't study art in a pre-professional
sense, they learn how to enrich and expand their lives as scientists or engineers in meaningful ways. And
although the majority of our students don't necessarily go on to experience a life in the arts, they learn
how to make the arts an important and profound part of their lives.
The arts provide a unique and critical addition to everything else MIT has to offer: the opportunity
to rediscover your capacity to imagine, and to express the deepest parts of your soul. Through the arts,
you'll discover new friends, new passions and new ways to express yourself and challenge yourself.
