MIT presents 4th Annual
“Great Glass Pumpkin Patch”
Sept. 17-18

Cambridge, MA.... Purple pumpkins? Fuchsia gourds? A harvest that will not rot? Over 1,000 unique, one-of-a-kind, hand-blown glass pumpkins, squashes and gourds in all sizes, shapes, colors and designs will sprout on the Kresge Oval at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology September 17-18, 2004.

The fourth annual "Great Glass Pumpkin Patch" begins with a preview reception (no sales) on Friday, Sept. 17 from 5-7 p.m. in front of MIT's Kresge Auditorium at 48 Massachusetts Avenue.

Visitors of all ages are invited to stroll through the "pumpkin patch" on Kresge Oval and purchase their favorite autumnal orb at the sale on Saturday, Sept. 18, between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. In case of rain, the sale will be held on Sunday, Sept. 19. Prices range from $20-$200, depending on the piece's size and complexity. Many of the works feature not only vivid colors, but swirls, stripes, spots, curlicues and unusual stems. Browsing is free.

The glass pumpkins were created by students in MIT's Glass Lab, an art program connected with MIT's Department of Materials Science and Engineering.

Pumpkin-making was overseen by glass artist Peter Houk, currently in residence at the MIT Glass Lab. "Glass pumpkins seem to capture people's imaginations in a special way," says Houk, adding, "Making glass pumpkins turns out to be a good way to teach beginners how to blow glass too."
