Minuterenovationom the General Body Meeting 3/8/95 1) Bulletin Board Space re-allocation: ASA bulletin board space has been re-allocated. If you previously had space or requested space and didn't get a copy of the new allocations, there is a list/map available in W20-401. If you have lost space, you have 1 week to remove anything left that is yours. If you have gained new space, you have an additional week from the clear-out deadline to start using your space, else it might be re-allocated again to some one else! 2) Summer Mailing results: From Dean Smith: the directory will be published in book form annually. Groups will still only get 1/2 page in the book. Groups can include a flyer, newspaper etc. IF the group a) provides all the flyers, b) stuffs the flyers at mailing time and c) pays some additional postage. 3) Susan Allen and Matthew Grein talk about proposed changes to the "Student Complaints Resolution System". This system was a loose aggregate of not clearly stated rules for dealing with student vs. student, student vs. faculty, harassment, date rape and all manner of other student complaint issues. The first target of the document is just to pull all the rules into one place. The second target is more student involvement. Big issue: should there be the option, or even a mandatory "trial by peers" ?? This would be a board of students, probably 5, who would sit in on the hearing with the defendant, plaintiff and the Deans who usually decide these cases. The student board could have power similar to a jury. Discussion: Major concerns about lack of anonymity, privacy and confidentiality with a student panel. Dean's are required by law to maintain confidentiality - no such rules exist for students. People expressed concerns that students would refrain from registering a complaint if it meant facing a panel of students. Another issue: demographics. Should the panel be part grad, undergrad, minority, women etc?? Generally difficult to do and should not try. If there was a student panel, it could be optional, but is this a fair, integral system? Should there be a "jury strike" type system where the plaintiff or defendant could strike student (or even Dean) members of the panel? General consensus was that the student panel should NOT be required. >> ANNOUNCEMENT by Kent Lundberg : The Walker Memorial Strategic Planning Committee which is in charge of examining the mission and function of Walker Memorial for future renovations will be having an open house Tuesday 3/14 at 7:30 pm in Talbot Lounge East Campus 3) Constitutional Amendment: This amendment changes the wording of the ASA constitution to move the date of "assumption of new office" by the new execboard members to 2 weeks after the elections.
