Minutes March 28, 2000 present: Jocelyn, Philip, Brian, Ariel, JenC, Lex, Anna absent: Jen Berk at housing forum- excused agenda: group recognitions- old stuff new groups finances elections / transitions Thistle/ Boston CAN Rooming? next mail, GBM --- *group recognitions- old stuff: groups that applied for recognition but that haven't completed the process: Dahnhak Club- a type of yoga Ballroom Dance Club- revised Constitution Distributed Computing Consortium- education about distributed computing Middle Eastern club- middle eastern cultural organization Alliance for a Secular and Democratic South Asia- they've been meeting for two years- Jocelyn found an old petition for recognition that was technically incorrect- thus they were never recognized... should we recognize them even though they overlap with the Committee on Rights in South Asia? BRIAN- proactively check on kind-of defunct group *new groups Pure Love alliance- approved. ANNA will send recognition mail. Women's Volleyball- hazing form is missing. they should also clarify their status as a Graduate Student group. BRIAN will respond to them. Boston Campus Action Network investigate and report issues editorials--> write own paper and join with other activist groups (social justice cooperative? swass-d?) THEY SHOULD JOIN THE THISTLE. Social Justice Cooperative is already affiliated with Boston Campus Action Network... so we don't think Refuse and Resist to encourage an active stance on political issues... THEY SHOULD JOIN OTHER GROUPS. specific issues are "pro-choice prisioners- Amnesty International pro-immigrant and anti police brutality..." The only thing that is not covered is the pro-choice angle... Grains of Rice- discussion and consensus on not recognizing... summary: ASA: Grains of Rice was not recognized last spring because it's a single one night event. For the event to be successful in future years, requires continued good planning, but should not be its own student group. Richard says- Spring Weekend is same thing: we should be recognized. ASA: If groups want Grains of Rice to happen, it will happen. Having a student group that does this specifically won't guarantee that it will happen, sets a bad precedent for recognizing other groups. Might mean that other groups will try to gain recognition for one-time events. Finances- Grains *does* have its own bank account. Should talk to Laurie. Events are not recognized as student activities. ALSO, the event falls under the purpose of the Asian-American Caucas... Pangea... Grains of Rice should be a subcommittee of a pre-recognized group. JOCELYN will deal bulletin board allocations- next meeting ARIEL will mail groups that have been bad. also, will fix gross boards by pulling off old posters and putting up a sign explaining that the space is dedicated to X group. Pro-Life... they never got plastic... but it doesn't seem to be a problem Nightline should apply for board space/ have temporary display space on the new boards. ANNA will contact Nightline. Member reports: -------------- Brian- will probably stay on ASA for next year? (GSC rep) Lex- Primus locks for every door, but just in this building. We've also been allocated money to upgrade the SMAC door. also, buy furniture from SMAC funds to give to student groups. LEX will reply to jhawk asap. Before we upgrade the lock, we should talk to Technique, ADP (chris frat) because they also want to buy a lock and this makes it cheaper for them to do so. Anna- needs to coordinate with Office Depot about the SMAC office. Label office furniture, get shelves built. Take photos to document and make display for GBM presentation? JenChung- the BSU and the Tech didn't respond to the warning email. We need to figure out what to do with them. "Playing God"- moves that have to be coordinated. Dance Troupe should move into the IFC office a cappella groups should move into DT. MITGSP should move the Thistle to the VooDoo office and move into MITGSP. Dance Troupe performance at the end of April. CPW Activity Fair: Lsandler and Dheimbur are coordinators (Laura and Doug)- but no info has gone out about it. Groups need to be told where they are sitting etc. ARIEL will email lsandler and dheimbur and ask about activity fair status. ANNA needs to talk to Laurie about Tech Jazz singers taking $ from parents and not giving videos to them. Assuming money is still in the club's account, money should be refunded? finances- meeting with Margaret Bates- their big issue is that they want to find out historically where the money came from. It's been inconsistent, so we can't find out. We have info from the last year, but not from previously. PHILIP will email Luis and Matt to get $$ from the UA to cover last year's Midway expenses... we finally got billed for it... For next year's budget request- we should submit our request as a UA committee. Should we request money from the UA and GSC for the next Activity Midway? Philip really wants to get the money from deans- give account numbers we can bill... *Also, Activity Directory- how do we pay for it? 1. deans 2. private industry if we *really* have to do this. PHILIP will talk again to Bates to make sure she's still working on getting the funding. idea: circulate letter to deans, vest, treasury dept., d'arbeloff on ASA letterhead point out that not funding the Midway, not funding the Student Activities Directory: these are egregrious examples of underinvestment in student life see if that makes a difference. ANNA will draft. elections- don't have to be present to win, but probably won't get elected if not present. (Philip, JenChung, Brian and Alvar are re-running) transitions- start thinking about it. write one page summary of office. end of Patriots Day weekend- have meeting that Tuesday night.
