ASA Group Recognition Meeting Minutes Oct. 9, 2008 Attendance: Keone, Rachel, Shan, Paul, Rishi, Nan, Zhou We could do provisional approval of groups - basically any group would be approved provisionally - main things they would get: account at safo, room reservations - they would not get funding - not for most groups -- just for groups we're not sure about - reduces continuity - different ASA board looking at application to become group a year from now - we'll keep this in mind as we look at the groups; see if this mitigates the problems Looking through apps in order they came in: -- MIT Research association: 5-0-2 provisional Shouldn't MIT be doing this (eg. UROP office?) Would putting MIT's name on a mediocre journal do MIT harm? Still feel like we should give them a chance -- MMM A PIE: 0-4-3 -- Asymptones: 4-0-2 full Rishi abstained because he's in the group -- MIT Bakers: 5-1-0 provisional Worried that ASA recognition wouldn't do anything for them, just be donating baking supplies to Next House But trying to be broader than a residence group -- Roosevelt Institution: haven't gotten back to us -- Unite for Sight: 5-0-1 full -- MIT Melodies: 5-0-1 provisional Haven't been around, like the Asymptones -- Kairos at MIT: 6-0-0 provisional -- Sloan International Development Consulting: 6-0-0 full, contingent on Sloan->MIT, open to grads, take out Sloan from name -- MIT Rubik's Cube Club: 5-0-1 provisional We'd like to see this happen, but they should prove themselves a bit -- MITKNIT: 6-0-0 full Been around for a year -- MIT ROTC Association: 0-6-0 -- Next Act: 0-3-3 Rachel abstained because of participation in MTG should not be called Next Act should do production on campus, not Next House -- Society for Women in Mathematics: 6-0-0 sponsored -- MIT Students for Bhopal: 0-3-3 -- Horizon Music Club: 6-0-0 provisional -- Syncopasian: 6-0-0 full -- MIT Student Mentors: 5-0-1 provisional not as localized as Next Act the legitimacy will help, to eg. get rides from zip car -- MIT Film Cooperative: 6-0-0 table does Campus Movie Fest still exist? -- HST GSA: 6-0-0 sponsorship recognition pending sponsorship -- Camp Kesem MIT: 6-0-0 full already done 2 camps -- MIT Capoeira Angola: 6-0-0 full -- Saudi Students Organization: 6-0-0 provisional, contigent on several things totals: 7 full, 8 provisional, 4 no. A handful tabled or postponed. The groups we didn't recognize we don't want to sort of recognize either; ie. we want them to go back and look at their stuff, so sub-provisional recognition isn't right for them. Database already has provisional/full distinction in place Do we want to add a "fundable" bit to the database, allowing us to recognize groups we don't want to fund?
