ASA Minutes 2/28/2009 1:30-4:00 Attendance: Keone, Shan, Leonid, Dylon, Rachel, Nan, Rishi, Zhao Religious groups & schedules office - Dylon & keone met with schedules office, Jed - Rule in faculty rules & regulations: "classrooms are not to be used for religious ceremonies", but religious ceremony is not defined. scheduling office wayne johnson has a very broad definition of religious ceremonies, different from bob randolph's more narrow interpretation - for now: religious groups can still submit reservation request, but those would be reviewed by the schedules office. - jed's suggestion: can't have exclusive activities that use MIT resources - followup meeting with bob randolph, wayne johnson, jed Some problems with student groups: - classrooms can't be used for companies on campus for interviews, reserved for them by student groups - signatories not being responsible for the rooms when student groups use the space, and leave them in bad shape after use - we can remind student groups, but not much we can do beyond that. there is a "punishment" system, but it's reactive. classroom reservations are actually more limited than asa thought, which would affect recognition rate of MIT Student Groups. reservations office is a fiefdom, being perhaps unnecessarily scrutinizing of student groups asa actions: disseminate information, make note at GBM, talk with bob randolph about religious group in general New groups 18 new groups Big Banger: funded 7-0-0 MIT for Change: funded 7-0-0 MTG Games: unfunded 7-0-1 contigent on name change Aerie: funded 7-0-1 contingent on settlement with daper they've been talking with daper -- wait for confirmation? safety issues -- we don't generally worry about it, daper can sustainability -- it's a frosh that has training to train other people, and maybe even training to train other people to train other people India School Fund (MIT Chapter): 8-0-0 table they have money from ameriprise, so probably don't need funding we could put it under gpi - well, chapter at harvard, ny, it's a bigger than mit thing heather not happy about group, we should talk to her MIT-Minority MBA Association: sponsored (OME) 8-0-0 contigent on name change and letter name confusing differing from national, in that all minorities not just black probably fine if they differ in name too from national ASPIRE: funded 8-0-0 sending textbooks to Iraq strong PSC support, lots of good and well-defined relationships with existing NGOs really inspire us, have put in a lot of work already, good to have MIT's name associated with it : ) Secretary's choice of the early-spring cycle! Biological Engineering Undergraduate Board: sponsored 7-0-0 -- give heads up to BE-BMES Talked to BE-BMES, as we told them to. Have a list of unconvincing differences, though essentially they have different audiences. Unfortunate for BEUB, since they never asked for BE-BMES to exist. In practice BE-BMES is highly BE, though. BE-BMES could become BMES .. Palestine@MIT: unfunded 7-0-0 < 15 palestinians at MIT at all 6.270: unfunded 5-0-2 uh, why? I guess they want advertizing capabilities. If they later give us a sponsorship letter, do we make them sponsored? will other classes apply for funded status now too? MIT cricket club: unfunded 7-0-0 club sports (CAC) said they didn't have enough money for them last year's tournament very successful people should pay for participating in tournament, not MIT, esp. since most participants are non-MIT Leadership Training Institute: 5-0-2 tabled until we see what PSC says Only group last year where PSC said no has funding now, from somewhere unconvinced it's not a resume building exercise Christian Music Fellowship Ensemble: unfunded 7-0-0 Next Act: no 5-0-2 also, please write shorter applications MIT Vegan and Vegetarian Society: funded 6-0-1 unique, fills a need Stammtisch: unfunded 7-0-0 like Palestine MIT Emerge Global: funded 6-0-1 Society for Creatives: unfunded 7-0-0 tell them to make sure they are advertizing to outside their friend circle -Rishi
