PROPOSAL:

I request funding from your organization for the High School in Duvva, AP.
During my last trip to India in December/Jan 1997, I have visited this
school and impressed with the work and co-operation of the villagers in
the development of the school. The villagers contributed to the building
fund and purchased land for the school few years back with the tireless
efforts of the then Head Master, Sri T.V. Subba Rao. Now the School has a
pacca building and a play ground for the children. It is one of the best
organized schools in the area where all teachers are very co-operative and
working closely with the community.

FUNDING REQUESTED:

  Rs 55000

HISTORY:

4/22/97	Project proposal received from K.V. Rao.

5/6/97 Discussed in Projects Meeting

5/30/97	Check sent for $1550 to India Network Foundation from ASHA-MIT
account. Still looking for a sponsor.

8/08/97 The money will be used not to fund the construction of compound walls
and toilets. This has been taken up by the help of parents association
and Shramadhan activities. The ASHA-MIT money will be used instead
for making benches in the classrooms. The text of KV Rao's email
        follows,

"I just returned from a trip to India and want to update you on the
progress. The toilets and the compound wall have been constructed with the
help of parents association and sramadhan. The headmaster requested that
we spend all our funds on benches to students since they have done their
part of work. A suitable local manufacturer has been identified and orders
will be placed this week. Probably, they will have one or two benches
presented to the school during the August 15th meeting. A special ceremony
is better to focus more and get more paper coverage and hence I suggested
to do the desks/benches dedication some other date than August 15th.
K.V. Rao"

8/24/97 The benches have been made. Photos should follow. A website has been
created by INF that has photos of the Duvva school. It also announces
the ASHA-MIT funding <http://www.indnet.org/ap/>. The text of KV Rao's
        email follows,

"We have a short report and few pictures of the school
at http://www.indnet.org/ap/

I just called this evening to check the progress on the benches. Benches
have been made and painting of names of donors have to be done this week
before they are given to the school. Unfortunately there is no telephone
to the Head Master or to the school. If any of your people wish to visit
the school, the address is

COMMENTS:

6 May, 1997. Projects Meeting.
We liked the project. K.V. Rao is a reliable source. The project
proposal is reasonable and can be easily monitored.
India Network has an office in India to monitor progress.
The project can be evaluated at the end of the year and the
items requested are essential for the school.

STATUS:

Approved. Looking for funders. Giri, Aparna, Sri to contact a potential donor
volunteered to support a project.

Proposal:

Construction of Compound Wall, Wooden Desks, and Toilets at High
School, DUVVA, Andhra Pradesh

I request funding from your organization for the High School in Duvva, AP.
During my last trip to India in December/Jan 1997, I have visited this
school and impressed with the work and co-operation of the villagers in
the development of the school. The villagers contributed to the building
fund and purchased land for the school few years back with the tireless
efforts of the then Head Master, Sri T.V. Subba Rao. Now the School has a
pacca building and a play ground for the children. It is one of the best
organized schools in the area where all teachers are very co-operative and
working closely with the community.

During my visit, the Head Master showed me the nuisance from one side of
the neighbors who get in to school compound and throw their trash in
school grounds. He requested that a compound wall be constructed on one
side of the school to put a stop to this activity.

2. I have also seen the class 6 and class 7 where children are sitting
just on the floor. The HM requested some desks be provided so that the
children will have proper place to keep their books and take exams.

3. The HM also told me that there is no toilet facility on the school
ground now for boys and girls. He requested that at least we provide
toilet facility to girls if funds donot allow for both sexes.

The local MLA is very supportive of the project and would help get a
matching grant from his or MPs fund to the project. The Villagers are
expected to provide Sramadhan for the construction. With this help in
consideration, I estimate about Rs. 55,000/ a one time cost would fix
these problems for the school and strengthen its resources.
(The following budget assumes Sramadhan from villagers and a grant from
MLA fund)
Compound Wall- Rs. 20,000
Toilet Facilities- 15,000
Student Desks- 20,000
Total Estimated- Rs. 55,000
------------------------------
The school caters to about 10 villages nearby and is located in
a rural village attached to main highway. It caters to about 400 students
from classes 6th to 10th. Our India Project Director's office is located
close to this site and if funded, the project will be carried out by the
India Network Foundation directly through our resident Director, of course
in consultation with the Head Master.
---

Please let me know if you have any questions. The project will be taken up
immediately before the rainy season comes in June/July 97 if funded.
