Breakthrough in Memory Announced GenDiver announces its Memorex unit has developed a breakthrough in memory interaction.
GEO Peacekeepers Arrive 2000 extra GEO Peacekeeper troops have arrives on Poseidon.
Marshall Lightfoot calls for Whitney, asking her to identify a man from her village, who she does (Jorge). Jorge is in custody, and Whitney can't talk to him now, maybe later. Eventually, Whitney finds out that he's in for murder, has admitted his guilt, and is pretty depressed. She also discovers that the Marshall wanted him identified because the village was acting a bit fishy.
Everyone hops into the plane to go to Fathom deeps. Pilot adds a fair amount of extra chop to the otherwise boring plane ride. In Fathom deeps, people are abnormally mad at each other. Many people have decided that the changes in the children are because the aborigines are making the humans one with the planet. One group thinks this is good and ecological, another thinks that Poseidon is betraying them even though they've tried to live in harmony with the planet.
Regina visits Billy, the fish-calling boy, and finds him slightly more talkative. He says everyone is mad, and that's bad. He admits later to Whitney that he has had a few dreams like hers as well. Pilot runs into a fisherman named Otto who hates fish, hates ecology, and is generally much less environmental than the villagers were before.
Whitney talks to the village elders and gets a full briefing, more or less, on what happened. Basically the group that accepts the changes and the one that feels betrayed have been almost coming to blows, and finally they did. Chiquita, the murdered woman, was especially acerbic that night to Jorge, blaming his rejection of the changes on his failure to relate to his (green) son. Jorge and his friends had been drinking a lot, drank some more, and later ambushed Chiquita and stabbed her to death. Unfortunately, someone reported it to the GEO, and the village gave up Jorge as the culprit rather than admitting to a deeper problem. Jorge felt pretty bad about it and went along with that plan.
At dinner that night Otto arrives with a big and rare fish - a terrible taboo in the village. Whitey, feeling argumentative, starts to rip into him, and he complains that Poseidon is turning them into fish. The whole thing quickly degenerates into a general argument. Pilot and the others retreat and manage to get Whitney to follow. She wants to go back, and although Pilot tries to grab her and succeeds in treeing her she does. When the others follow her back the argument has turned into a huge brawl, which Whitney joins enthusiastically.
When Dive tries to get them to stop, he only succeeds in turning everyone against him. Pilot has to use the stunner to rescue him and everyone retreats, even Whitney. Whitney realizes that her anger was strange and may not have been entirely hers. Regina finds a strange organic molecule in Whitney's blood, and then in her own. Dive has a little, and Pilot none.
The riot being over, the team creeps back to talk to the elders. They also give blood, and Regina goes on to gather more from many different people. The elders decide to make everyone forage outside the village for a few weeks to cool off.
The next day (146.101) Regina analyses her samples and finds that the chemical is strong in those with the low-intron areas she noted during her earlier visit. Dive and other "normal" people actually make antibodies to the chemical. Unfortunately, it's too complex to produce for testing. The chemical isn't present in any quantity in the air and water of the village, however.
By 148.101 the team is convinced that it's some sort of pheremonal production from the modified villagers and that there is some sort of feedback going on. Pilot doesn't succeed in making either Whitney or Regina mad to gather angry sweat samples, though. Regina doesn't think that an antidote would be any easier to make than the chemical itself, maybe harder.
"It's trying to harvest feral children!" - Pilot
Whitney sleeps near the lava tube to try to inform the aborigines about what is going on, and does have a dream about her recent life.
