Upon realizing that they are ambushed by slime-covered miners, Cady feels a shortness of breath and a pain in her left side, and promptly keels over. Elder Tanner has to lay on hands pretty quick to restart her ticker! Meanwhile the others start shooting at the slimy miners, discovering quickly that only head shots are worthwhile. They're joined by a man in a long duster who helps them put down the creatures with an odd gun that has a shotgun barrel mounted in the middle of a large revolver (it's a LeMat, for those who care).
Afterwards, he introduces himself as a Texas Ranger and asks them what the hell they're doing up here. Tobey shows her slime mark and tells him they're trying to fix things up. He allows as how they've done well enough so far.
They fix up one of the cabins to make it defensible and search around a bit. Finally the posse decides to check out the mine, but they meet the Ranger coming out of it. "There's nothing in there," he says. After they come out, something explodes deep in the mine, collapsing it.
Some tracking on Tobey's part reveals that the miners often went to the west, and following their track brings the posse and the Ranger to a stream flowing down from the north. There is an oily sheen on the water. They follow the stream northwards to a narrow valley almost filled with a beaver pond, below a sheer cliff. The beaver dam and lodge look more like something from Aliens than from Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom, however, and the water is thick with slime. Someone spots slime dripping out of a hole in the cliff into the pond - it seems clear they have to get up there. Before they can get going, the beavers attack. Their teeth are huge and they drip with writhing slime. Bart keeps their attention while Tobey, James, and the Ranger blow them away. Bart does get pretty badly bitten in the process.
They all climb to the top of the cliff and using ropes climb down to the cave mouth. It's quite narrow. The Ranger goes first despite the best efforts of the team. Crowell stays up top, and Tobey brings up the rear.
Bart and Joseph are right behind the ranger, and hear him starting a fight with someone. Emerging into a small cave, they find the Ranger fighting with a slime-person, but this one can project tentacles of slime and uses them to squeeze the Ranger unconscious. Between Bart and Elder Tanner (and God) they manage to put down the thing.
The small cave has a niche in the far wall that is filled with pure water and lit from above by a hole in the roof. In front of it is a fountain of slime, where the foul stuff bubbles up. Engraved below the niche, in Spanish, is "May the water from His cup subdue the coins of His betrayer." Cady takes a handful of water and pours it on the fountain, causing the slime to dry up immediately. Revealed beneath the fountain is a familiar silver coin, which is tucked away before the Ranger comes around.
Without the slime, the monster seems to be a normal man, albeit with his head blown up. Cady and Tobey drink small amounts of the water and it clears up their marks as well. The rest of the water is scooped into a water-skin. The floor of the cavern has the remains of a complex occult pattern in charcoal, much smudged. The Ranger wakes up, and works on smudging out the rest of it. Cady examines the body and finds a journal detailing this man's desire to find the coin and release its power for typical mad sorcerer reasons. Obviously, it didn't work so well.
The posse insists on taking time to bury the man, and the Ranger takes his leave. Before he goes, he gives his name - Travis Cote - to Tobey. The posse makes their way out of the mountains to Santa Fe.
There, they experiment with not sending a telegram, but find that as well as a pull to send it they start having thoughts about killing people to send out the telegram, and decide to give in before their tattoos makes them do something they regret. The next day, a large crow turns up with a bag of gold dust on one leg and a silver ring on the other. They put the coin in the bag (taking the dust) and send it on its way. Also while in Santa Fe they collect the reward for Red Warburton (as they have his engraved gatling pistol) and Cady cleans out the local poker games.
GM: Marcus drew the one and only blue chip at the beginning of the session. And then used it restarting Cady. Easy come...
