"Invitations You Can't Refuse"

Elder Tanner is feeling sick in the morning, depriving the posse of his services. Luckily, they turn out not to need them (except perhaps his service as a moral compass). Also that morning Tombstone fills up with soldiers on day leave, making it almost impossible to get anything to eat or drink.

Luckily for our heroes, Curly Bill spots them in town looking at the ruckus and conveys an invitation to the Clanton ranch for lunch. They accept, and then debate among themselves while Bill goes to get a drink. In the end, they leave their coin under Ginger's collar and leave Ginger in their tent with the missionary.

The ride out to the Clanton ranch passes through a gully that would be an excellent ambush location. Curly isn't really convincing about why the trail goes that way, but no one calls him on it and there are no ambushes that anyone can see. Cady does learn that Curly keeps a derringer on a thong around his neck, though.

At the ranch they meet Ike Clanton - "Old Man" Clanton himself - and his son Phinneas. Ike is a Southern gentleman, and serves them mint juleps and a suitable lunch, which is spent discussing cattle ranching and trivialities. Cady plays dumb and gets cows confused with sheep a lot. After lunch they finally get around to discussing the coin. Apparently Ike has a collection and wants to pick up more specimens. He's willing to pay them $300 for the coin. They're impressed, but tragically have already conveyed the coin to another buyer, and say so. They even give Ike his name and how to contact him. Ike makes noises about maybe selling to him, because Ike isn't interested in a collection he can't finish. They promise to send a telegram about it.

After that they view Ike's shotgun collection - he has quite a fine set of shotguns, though Tobey notes that he hasn't shot anything really interesting (judging by the heads on his wall). Then they ride back to town, taking time to review the ambush gorge from the edge. No one is there waiting for them. They wonder if there would have been an ambush had lunch turned out differently. Just when they're all settled and riding through the gorge for home, Robert is struck from his saddle with convulsions. Everyone goes for their guns, but there is nothing wrong. Bart puts a branch in Robert's mouth to prevent tongue-biting.

Robert finds that Eagle was apparently angered by his silence at lunch (he said almost nothing during the negotiations). Eagle seizes him in its talons and takes him to a meeting Eagle had with an Apache shaman a few days before. Since he doesn't speak Apache, a few kachinas turn up to translate the conversation into Indian Sign.

The shaman was asking the spirits for help and got Eagle. The small problem is that the soldiers are harrying the Apache, who are fighting the railroad. The bigger problem, and the one he wants help with, is that the railroad has (untranslatable bit) who the Apache can't fight, and they keep them in special cars, along with their (untranslatable) water. Eagle pledges that his fledgling will come and help the Apache. Robert awakens a bit sore to tell everyone that they're on a mission. Surprisingly, there is no trouble about getting a mission from spirits, as long as it turns out to be a good mission.

The posse rides for a couple days back towards the railroad. The second day, Robert puts on ceremonial eagle dress, which is good because it helps the Apache recognize him. Five Apache braves turn up, including one who speaks English, and take the posse to a small camp in the mountains. There they speak with the shaman Basking Lizard through the interpreter. The camp has fourteen braves, three of whom are women (a recent innovation in Indian society), as well as the shaman.

There they get the whole story - the things that the Apache are worried about are the dead who railroad witch doctors have raised up. They live in the special rail cars during they day, and at night walk to the railhead and work. The Apache cannot infiltrate the camp at night because evil spirits watch for them - and the Apache are especially noticeable because they have made a pact with local nature spirits. And during the day they are of course too noticeable. But Robert and his friends should be able to get into camp and somehow deal with the problem.

There follows a lot of planning and a nighttime scouting trip to see the camp. Cady is able to use her sees in the dark magic to view the camp at night and watch the zombie horde come back from work. She also pinpoints the cabin that holds the two witch doctors - one white with a skull on a staff, one black with a top hat. They survey the four gatling towers as well, but can't learn too much about them at night. The next day will be spent resting up in preparation for the attack on the day after.

GM: One of the women turns out to be named Kills The Dead for killing a brave who had previously been killed and reanimated by the witch doctors. She's the most gung-ho of the band.
