"Backtracking"

Our heroes take the train to Dodge City, where they find they have to check their guns! Apparently the new Marshall, Wyatt Earp, has managed to get guns banned in town. They then get rooms and hit the town. Cady goes to some nicer places and wins a little money at poker and witnesses what appears to be some sort of spy luggage hand-off (but doesn't interfere). The others go to the Alhambra Saloon (or as the buffalo hunters that frequent it say, the Al-Ham-Bra) and learn a bit about the town and the James gang before there's a riot. Seems some think the James boys are heroes, and others not so much.

In the morning they find out that the silver coin in Dodge is apparently in a cattle pen to the west of the city. It's raining, so they go get their guns and head by that pen on their way out of town, pausing to dig up the coin. It turns out to be buried with a body, perhaps a month or two old. They take the coin and continue to ride west.

Once a ways out of town, they put the coin down on a rail and split it in half with a chisel. This leads to a half hour of looking for the half-coins in the rainy muddy grass. Just as they finish looking, a Black River train stops a mile or so ahead of them, where there is no station, and some people get off. Which is odd, so they ride a little further until Robert's sharp eyes can see that the group is working on the rails... the Union Blue rails, a few hundred yards north of the Black River ones.

Cady sneaks up on the group, and finds them to be setting explosives under the rails. There are seven of them, dressed in Confederate gray. One of the ones standing guard rather than working, Cady notices, is definitely not a Confederate, on account of being a woman. She sneaks back to report.

The posse decides that they will approach and demand the surrender of the group - the posse has rifles, and the "soldiers" have only shotguns and pistols. They do so, and after Tobey tells them she could put a round in the explosives, they decide to surrender, except for the woman, who turns and runs.

And then shoots the dynamite herself, once she has gotten a little way away. The others are all slain instantly, and the woman herself knocked flat. Tobey shoots her, hopefully in the leg, to try to keep her from getting away. When Robert and Tobey catch up to where she was, they find only her clothing and equipment. Her shirt is still buttoned and inside her jacket.

Realizing that the track is now a ruin, some of them ride east and some west to try to stop the trains. Elder Tanner's booming voice manages to bring the eastbound train to a stop, and the others arrive back in Dodge in time to stop the westbound train from leaving. Later, they tell Wyatt Earp the whole story including the disappearing woman, and he doesn't call them crazy but doesn't really seem to lend it much credence either. They tell the whole story except that the woman "got away" rather than vanished, to Union Blue, and are rewarded with first class round trip Union Blue tickets, and the local engineers and train workers insist on taking them to the saloon for some liquid gratitude.

The next day, Cady becomes convinced that the coin, broken in half, is somehow leaking evil, and they have to recast it into a coin. A confused smith is willing to put it back together, but thinks they are nuts. They end up going back to Denver and giving the coin to Lawless to put in the Pinkertons's safe, reasoning that they don't want to carry it if they are heading for their evil ex-master.

MM: When calculating whether or not to attack the "Confederates" the posse realized they had both horses and rifles. This seemed like a clear win. The confrontation went something like:
Tanner (using Voice of God) "Put down your weapons. We have you in our sights."
Them, weakly "Come and get us."
Tobey "I can shoot the dynamite from here."
We were so proud of our bloodless solution.

MM: After the posse cuts the coin in half (and before they put it back together) Tobey asks God if the coin is still evil and gets a yes along with some thoughts about how the coin got that way.

MM: Other good quotes from this run (in no particular order):
Wyatt Earp "That's a lot of guns. Which way are you riding out of town?"

Engineer to Tanner "You've gotta mighty loud voice."

Lawless "I thought you didn't need to bring coins to your evil master anymore."

Drunk guy in the Alhambra "So as buffalo hunters..."
Robert "We're not buffalo hunters"
Drunk guy "What are you?"
Tobey "We look for trouble, and when we find it we deal with it"
Drunk guy "So you're bounty hunters..."
Robert, gesturing to Tobey "She's dead."
