After Vorpwhistle reveals a startling new power, claiming to be able to speak to the dead, they return to the Peyton ranch and end up talking to Ma Peyton, left there alone. She's quite nice, but denies that anything happened involving Timmy. He's out riding somewhere, she thinks. Cady's ability to see through walls puts the lie to this: there's a corpse on the bed in Timmy's room. Robert tries to confront her with their suspicious, but her madness is unbreakable. Finally, Vorpwhistle and Cady ask politely to talk to Timmy "who they saw is in his room" and Ma tells them to get that rascal out of bed if he's still there. Timmy is missing the top of his head, but when the professor asks a question his mouth moves. Cady can't hear the responses, but it's still creepy. Unfortunately, Timmy knows little that helps them - he seems to have been possessed when he did the deeds, but that's all. "Go up the tree!" is Vorpwhistle's parting advice to him.
They go search various little copses of trees about, because Timmy said that the kids, including the possibly-chupacabra Jesse, used to play in the trees. It's a long search, but they finally are rewarded when a chupacabra drops out of the trees at Cady. It fails to grab her, and no sooner hits the ground than Tobey's machete has - snicker-snack! - lopped off its head. They put the head and body in separate bags, though unfortunately not before having to watch Dr. Vorpwhistle do some dissection. He pockets one particularly interesting novel organ.
Determining by fortune-telling that it probably isn't dead, Cady performs Achilles's Heel on it and gets a Peyton family photo. They can't find their way back to the ranch in the gathering dusk, though, and are forced to make camp.
In the early morning, Tobey's watch is interrupted when someone from the bushes nearly shoots her head off. It turns out to be Fast Sue, accompanied by the big guy and the Chinese kid. Cady kills Fast Sue with soul blasts, the bush not offering enough cover from them, and meanwhile Tobey gets kicked in the midsection by the Chinese kid and flops over like a rag doll. Grounded, she's still incredibly dangerous, evil machete flying about like the angel of death.
Or in this case, the angel of maiming. She takes off both of the big guy's feet and then one of the Chinese kid's as well, downing them both without immediately killing them. While trying to bandage the Chinese kid, they discover that he's down but not passive, and after he attacks again Robert puts him down for good with a shot to the chest. The big guy, who is unconscious from the pain, gets his wounds healed by Robert (though his feet are still off, it's a clean healed amputation).
At this point, the chupacabra makes a break for it, and is again beheaded by Tobey. Vorpwhistle discovers that it's grown its organs back, and eats the organ from the previous day. It tastes vaguely of avocado. They then take the monster back to the Peyton ranch and get Pa to throw it on a fire himself, which does it in. Robert then explains why, and Pa decides that they are clearly crazy and should leave. They leave the big guy with the Peytons, though.
Cady sneaks back into town, her incognito spell working perfectly this time... though only once she's removed her clothes. Luckily, she doesn't do anything to break it, leaving a note for Elder Tanner who is at the hotel so he'll gather up the posse's stuff and meet them outside of town. He does remember feeling strangely embarrassed and excited during the process, however. Cady additionally leaves a note for Father Duncan telling him what happened to his companions and that one of them survived. The others bury the bodies of Fast Sue and the unnamed Chinese kid, and then the posse gets out of Roswell, heading west.
