Grimme's Friday sermon is packed. The posse can only get up to about the midpoint of the cathedral in the teeming horde. In front of them are some more teeming worshipers, then three rows of Guardian Angels in red and white robes on the steps, then Grimme at the altar. His sermon is about the terrible sins everyone commits, and how they can come only to him for forgiveness. There's no opportunity for trouble until he asks the multitude to kneel to be forgiven... turning them from an impenetrable throng into so many stepping stones. Our heroes swing into action.
First Cady has the required Incognito spell misfire, succeeding so well that everyone becomes convinced she died in an attack earlier in the week. Elder Tanner pulls the cursed gun on Grimme at this sudden realization of his villainy, but doesn't fire it and complete the ritual right there. James tries to clear away some worshipers and Angels:
"You all had better clear out of here, because this is going to get ugly."
It works better on the masses than the Angels. Tobey takes the opportunity to look around and spots some snipers on balconies back behind them, and unwraps her Winchester, which she had been using as a crutch. The Angels draw swords.
Cady slips a vial of Mormon holy water into Joseph's pocket, but he doesn't even notice - apparently she stole it from the Temple back when they were in Salt Lake City and has been keeping it for a rainy day. He's too busy remembering the time right after Robert brought her back from the dead, when he told her he loved her and she said it's good to have something to look forward to. If they don't survive, she says she'll come look for him at his crystal sphere.
In any case, it's enough stiffening so that he doesn't give in to despair and shoot Grimme immediately. He begins to walk forward slowly, declaiming against him. James invokes various prayers to keep himself up, and starts to shoot swords out of the Angels' hands. Tobey shoots at the riflemen, which draws enough attention that James disarms one and Cady, breaking her don't notice me spell, slays the other with a soul blast. Grimme also tries to get Tobey and James's evil copilots to make them drop their weapons, but they both resist.
Robert runs to a window and dives through, retrieving the rifle he had hidden there the previous night. Grimme tries to kill him with a blast of fire from above, so he dives back in. James drops his first pair of pistols, luckily having picked up more, and draws another. Elder Tanner continues forward, and basically shouts himself a passage through the Angels, who are still strangely holding back. Grimme tells the Angels to kill everyone but the one armed man.
This lets loose the dogs of proverbial war. James moves his aiming point from swords to hands, and Robert just starts shooting. Tobey moves to stay with and protect Joseph, slashing her way through the Angels. Grimme tries to smite James, but fails, and succeeds in dropping a gargoyle on Robert, nearly squishing him (luckily he has his Turtle Shell favor running hot). The Angels have better luck - a few go for Robert, who dodges, and one slashes James horribly in the forearm... yet he soldiers on. God is my tendons!
Cady takes this moment to rouse the rabble, telling them that they're the Black River Gang, and have brought a large amount of food to give away in Lost Angels. It turns out that most of the posse's $4000 in various loot has been going to various small towns and hungry people they've met along the way. Elder Tanner makes it to Grimme, and says quietly:
"I just want to hear you admit your sins."
(trying to goad him) "I've done more bad things than you can even conceive of."
The masses rise up and rush the Guardian Angels, causing even more chaos. Elder Tanner remembers the time when he was recovering from having his arm off and got to see the site under the Mormon temple where Jesus is known to have come during his travels in the new world.
He then baptizes Grimme, having discovered just in time the holy water in his pocket (well, Tobey does the actual splashing, having a free hand). Joseph forgives Grimme his sins, and to prove it takes them on himself, shooting Grimme with the evil pistol... and then taking that on himself with the martyrdom miracle. He falls dead, shot through the heart. Grimme slumps, pistol suddenly in his hand, and as he falls a huge spirit unfolds from his back, a ten-foot-tall gaunt desert prophet in loincloth and beard with wild eyes.
Tobey's evil knife is momentarily a shiny clean machete, and then bursts into flame becoming a huge flaming sword. She strikes off the head of the thing with a mighty blow, but it still comes forward, smashing her with the altar. Robert calls on eagle to exorcise the spirit, and eagle rends it with mighty claws, pulling off an arm. Four smaller winged demons appear as well.
Robert kills two with his rifle, and James two with his pistols, and though James is stabbed in the kidney by a Guardian Angel and burnt by fire spat from a demon he keeps fighting. Tobey duels with the giant Grimme demon, striking off the other arm, while eagle is again invoked (twice) to take its legs off. Tobey's hair catches on fire, and her strange eye also turns into an orb of flame. Finally, she stabs the demon through the heart, and smashes the altar.
The others run from the collapsing cathedral - James brings out Grimme, who is strangely alive, and Robert calls his horse Lucky and brings out Elder Tanner's body and Cady. Tobey is the last out, completely aflame by that point, and has one last thing to say before collapsing to ash:
"That worked."
James has time to do last rites on Tobey's ashes and Elder Tanner before himself expiring from his wounds, leaving Cady and Robert as the only survivors.
GM: There were some more flashbacks that didn't quite fit into the flow of my narrative. Cady drew strength from the poker game she played in Tombstone where she got the same hand her brother did when he died and had the chance to enact her wacky plan to bring him back... but decided that she didn't want to bring people back that way any more. Tobey drew strength during her battle with the Grimme-demon from the memory of meeting her widower in El Paso and having him apologize for being bad to her, and having the chance to forgive him. Robert apparently also secretly found Cady's brother lost on the tree and helped him go up, though he told no one (apparently they didn't need to know).
