A few days pass in which nothing exciting happens. Esteban goofs up a spell and spends much of the time fascinated with himself. Angelina muses about whether to accept B clearance. "$500,000? What would I spend it on?" "Guns? Shoes?" "Gun-Shoes!" Angelina spends some time shopping with Tina, which avoids Esteban's traditional confusion about what Tina should wear (he tends to waffle between sexy and frumpy without hitting the middle).
Thielo talks to Gwen some about how to fix herself, and gives her the notebooks on her own construction. She's writing in a diary when he comes in to talk to her, and he notes something on the page about becoming herself and wondering whether she should wait for Gavin or not. In the SILVER tradition of knowledge-sharing, he tells no one.
Alexandra wakes up one morning knowing that Mark Wallace, Assistant Director of the FBI, has a large collection of child pornography. She's a bit confused by how she knows this, however, since she's spend the past few days mostly in lab and certainly hasn't watched any news. A quick survey finds that everyone else knows it too, and that it's only breaking news right now. It seems like this might be some sort of cliomantic attack on the A.D. (who was the one who permitted Dirk Godfrey to contact TNI). A little more thought connects it to the Labor Secretary scandal, which may have been just to divert attention from the magical goings-on. Gavin is sent up to Seattle to be close to Alex Abel, just in case this sort of thing is spreading.
Later on that day TNI discovers that Dirk Godfrey has been killed in his home, and "REVENGE" painted on his walls in blood. It seems likely that someone, perhaps the Sleepers, is targeting the Inquisition's FBI contacts. SILVER heads back to D.C.
When they get there an Inquisition team is already at work. Officer Bob is in charge and is at the hospital keeping an eye on Dawn and Sachmo. A woman named Ruth Ingersoll is staking out A.D. Pelf's house to make sure nothing happens there. Matthew Goldfarb, epidermomancer, is waiting at the hotel to talk with SILVER. He still sounds distressingly like Bobcat Goldthwait - it is in fact the same epidermomancer that SILVER chased many months ago. Now he's been recruited. He has no hard feelings about it, though.
Esteban goes to relieve Ruth so she can get some rest - Thielo wants her sneaky services in the morning to stake out sites looking for cliomancers. The rest of them go to the hospital, where they find Sachmo strapped to his bed, apparently raving. Matthew reads his chart and discovers that he's been like this for a day or so, having been put on some intense psycho-tropic medication normally used to people who are near catatonic. His chart says nothing about why he's been put on the medication. The team corners a resident and get a promise to talk to Dr. Smith in the morning. Meanwhile, they disable the drug feed, trying to make it look like an accident, and arrange for a doctor of their own to be there in the morning as well.
In the morning, Thielo and Ruth are staking out the Mall when Thielo catches sight (aura sight) of a golden eye on top of the Washington Monument as the first rays of dawn hit it. He and Ruth spend the entire morning looking for cliomancers but strangely find none at all.
At the hospital, Dr. Patel arrives and gives a second opinion that the drug is completely unwarranted. He then argues with Dr. Smith, who remembers clearly that Sachmo was almost catatonic and needed the drug, despite the fact that no one else remembers this. Sachmo is taken off the drug. Dawn is released today, and talks with the team a bit, promising to keep in touch. She goes straight to work.
At noon, the two aura goggles and two more sneaks arrive (Jimmy and Jerry - "I do the breakin', he does the enterin'") They're briefed on how to use the goggles to look for cliomancers and sent out to do so. Jerry puts on a tinfoil hat and cardboard sign trying to look like a harmless crazy. The team also asks Ryan to dig up the Santa Fe cliomancer and sends Officer Bob back to keep watch on Sachmo.
In the afternoon, Esteban and Angelina go by Dawn's house to make sure it's okay, and discover that there is someone inside, watching them (the curtains keep moving for someone to peek out). They get Dawn and the rest of the team. Dawn and Esteban go to the front, slowly, while Thielo, Angelina, and Alexandra go around the back and bust in.
The intruder turns out to be a bald man wearing nothing but a trench-coat. He's extremely strong and fast, bleeds black ichor instead of blood, and gets away after breaking Thielo's arm. The team puts some bullets in him but don't bring him down, and no one but Thielo is hurt (possibly because he decides to run away rather than fight). They take samples of the ichor and clear out.
"It looks icky!" "That's why they call it ichor." -exchange between Matthew and Alexandra.
That evening, Thielo wraps his arm, pretends nothing is wrong, and gets Darwin to send him a new elbow joint. Dawn is staying at an FBI safehouse after spending the afternoon dealing with procedure (what happened here?) and talking to A.D. Pelf. Amanda Pelf apparently is reluctant to connect everything together, but does want to keep Dawn safe.
