In the morning, Esteban goes to the nearest mall and purchases three neon tetras (dipped himself) and another kitten. He sneaks back into the hotel and does the ritual, writing "Jesus" on the egg this time. The kitten stiffens and dies in moments. Esteban feels pretty bad about that, as he's never thought of himself as a kitten-killer before. He hides the dead kitten in a box under the sink in the bathroom. There is also some strategizing and planning that morning, but what the plan was isn't terribly important to later events.
At noon the group goes to the boat and begins surveillance. Jennifer, we should note, is never spotted. However at 3:00 while watching people using her ether goggles, Alexandra spots a disembodied presence nearby. It runs away from her when she tries to interact with it, and she chases it towards Van who turns out to have a smaller disembodied aura dogging his heels. The bigger one flees the ship, but the smaller stays and is eventually determined to be something like a cat. The two presences are widely believed to be ghosts.
Around this time Gavin gets a call from Dan who wants to confirm that Thielo has been with them the whole time. Yes, he has. Okay. What was that about? Gavin lets Thielo know about the phone call, but they're not sure what to make of it.
Later on on the cruise, Esteban bribes a roulette girl to call him if Jennifer comes on board. Jennifer apparently is around most days and usually plays the wheels. At nine, Esteban stays on board while the others return to their SUVs. The ghost is waiting there, and gets in to the vehicle they're taking home!
On the drive back, Alexandra tries to talk to it, and succeeds. It says its name is Gustav, and that the mage they are looking for sent him to spy on them. The ghost urges them to free it by performing a ritual... it doesn't want to be bound in the cage of probabilities any more. They also pry out of it that Jennifer has some associates, but it can't say who they are, or where she is. Everyone is assuming that the ghost is Gustav Hawley, but his memories seem to have been all given up - he doesn't remember what a clockwork is.
During the conversation Gustav tells Alexandra that Thielo isn't human. There's a lot of consternation at this, but Alexandra decides that he's trying to deceive her. Seeing how upset it makes her, the ghost tells her to forget the whole thing. Various people almost but don't quite put things together yet.
When they get back to the hotel, the ghost explains the ritual more and Alexandra attempts it. It fails. The second time through, however, Thielo is helping Lexa review the words when he realizes that one of the phrases is "Enter Into Me O Spirit" in ancient Etruscan. "STOP!" he yells, and Lexa does. They enter into the bitter recriminations phase, and the ghost tries to persuade them some more but fails and departs in a way they can't follow.
Later on that night there is a discussion about Esteban who continues to be absent (in the usual Esteban way) and his magic is described as being based on taking advantage of young girls. This leads to a discussion between Gavin and Esteban the next morning in which he reassures Gavin that the magic is based on that feeling of sudden love... not actually on sex. This seems to make Gavin happy.
But returning to the night before: the crew decides to move hotels, and Angelina volunteers to pack up Van's stuff. She discovers a dead kitten under the sink, apparently dead for weeks. Soldiering on nobly, she runs across the arm in a bag under the bed, and freaks out. She starts to walk down the highway to the new hotel while the others finish packing up (the dead kitten ends up in a dumpster) and catch up with her. Thielo leaves a message for Van, who isn't answering his phone, letting him know that he should perhaps avoid Angelina and sleep somewhere else that night. This doesn't prove to be a problem.
Thielo also checks in with Ryan Morrison, who tells him that the dead are all messed up and looking for bodies and no good. Ryan also gives the team a couple of exorcism rituals - a long Latin one that's pretty harmless and a much shorter African one that involves a good deal of blood loss and mess. He also tells Thielo more about the call earlier - apparently they have a photo of Thielo entering a shop in Boston that TNI was watching a couple of days ago. Morrison doesn't know more about the false Thielo.
In the morning, a TNI lab tech calls Alexandra with results of the meat test. "Have you heard of Tahitian cuisine? It's part pork, and part long pork!" Lexa hangs up on him and throws up. Thielo takes the news that they've been eating human meat a little better. At this point Van arrives and comes to talk to them, and they think about filling him in but he asks if he wants to hear this, Alexandra says no, and he leaves. The conversation with Gavin follows after this point. Meanwhile, the Strausses call back the lab tech (Richard Molesby) who apologizes for being so blunt before. After some prodding, he allows as how it could maybe be monkey rather than human and promises to look into the whole swamp monkey thing, although he doesn't think there's any such animal native. And without tails, they'd really be swamp apes instead of monkeys.
At breakfast, Angelina is mostly ignoring Van. Lexa is eating toast until she can't take the other people eating their bacon and sausage and retreats to her room. Thielo tells everyone that Lexa has a plan but won't say what it is.
After breakfast, the plan somehow evolves into first exorcizing the cat ghost from Esteban using the more discreet but longer three hour Latin ritual. Esteban first arranges to have flowers and a note sent to Angelina apologizing for an unspecified something, and then he and Alexandra start the ritual, with Thielo assisting and Gavin watching. Angelina goes back to her room and calls Tina to talk about nothing in particular.
The flowers arrive at Angelina's room midway through the ritual, and she arrives at the ritual room shortly thereafter and starts yelling at Esteban for charging off of her. He of course can't maintain the ritual, but Lexa keeps it up through force of will. Esteban swears up and down that he hasn't been charging off of Angelina and she leaves, somewhat mollified but not that much. A comment she makes to Gavin on the way out sends him charging in believing that Van has been charging off of Gwen, but again Van says it isn't so and Gavin believes him. After the ritual is done (and seems to work) Alexandra tells Van that he'd better not be charging of of her either. "Everyone else was making threats, I felt so left out."
On the ride out to Chateau Rouge to check things out some more (Alexandra and Thielo having alleged that some of the BBQ was "unknown meat, maybe monkey" and therefore suspicious) Alexandra is looking around with her ether goggles checking for ghosts when she looks at Thielo and notices that his aura is very regular, and that she can almost see push rods and gears in it. She opens the door and throws herself out at speed! They slam on the brakes and so does the other vehicle and everyone piles out.
Alexandra wants to know where the real Thielo is. The goggles are passed around and everyone but Angelina gets a look at Thielo's aura and finishes putting two and two together. Angelina put two and two together some time earlier, but the narrator is unaware exactly when that was. Angelina leads Gavin in explaining that clearly the ghost messed up the goggles to confuse Lexa.
At this point a swamp monkey screams from the underbrush and Gavin and Van throw themselves in pursuit. Van ends up in a briar patch but Gavin manages to skewer and slay the monkey. In carrying the beast back to the car, they see that not only is its face like a wrinkly old man, but that it has a tattoo on its arm - a heart with "Mary" on a banner.
Meanwhile Angelina says something to Thielo that causes him to slap her quite hard, and then separates herself from him. The narrator would very much like to fill in that little exchange having been distracted by the monkey. Alexandra is persuaded that things are just confused.
The Strausses and Van buy a lot of BBQ from Jack's while Gavin and Angelina head back to the hotel. Gavin takes the injury from Thielo's slap onto himself, startling Angelina, but mostly they brood on the way back. The monkey is bundled off to the labs for analysis, and later so is the BBQ. Angelina has a theory that this (meaning total chaos and breakdown) is what happened to the last team TNI sent here. Perhaps Mama Jinky put some sort of voodoo curse on the team? Gavin can't quite dismiss that.
What Lexa says to Thielo later...
