Physical Education General Institute Requirement.

| Our office offers a variety of physical education classes for undergraduate students to complete their 8 point General Institute Requirement. Classes generally meet twice a week for 40 minutes. The program administers over 40 different class sessions beginning every six weeks during the academic year. |
- What is the General Institute Requirement?
• Passing the Swim Requirement- taking a swim class or passing a swim test
• 8 points of physical education is required, generally consisting of 4 classes that meet 2 days a week for 40 minutes continuing for 6 weeks (a quarter). Successful students complete this requirement during their Freshmen year. However you are responsible to complete the courses by the end of your sophomore year.
- I missed the PE lottery. How can I register for a Physical Education class?

- Are there options to earn points for activities other than physical education classes?
You can earn physical education points for participation in varsity athletics, ROTC, group exercise classes, private training sessions, and private swim lessons. Click here for more information.
- What if I need to drop a Physical Education Class because it conflict with another class?
• Email: Physedoffice@mit.edu with DROP in the Subject line
• AND Note in message area 1. Your name 2. Class Name, Day and Time.
- How do I register for more than one Physical Education Class?
The lottery schedules you for only one class. To take an additional class:
• See open class list on web.
• Attend 1st day of a class on the “OPEN CLASS LIST” for an available spot.
- I missed the Freshman Group Swim Test. How can I now take it?
• Swim tests are given at 9:30 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday during the Academic Year.
• Have your ID and be prepared to swim 100 yards.
• Ask a lifeguard to notify a deck manager to administer your test.
- I can not take the swim test in a mix gender setting. How do I complete the swim test?
Contact physedoffice@mit.edu who can facilitate a gender specific environment by appointment.
- I can not take a swim class in a mix gender environment. Is there an all male or all female class?
• Email physedoffice@mit.edu with MALE ONLY or FEMALE ONLY in subject line to be notified of upcoming gender specific swim class.
• Note in the message box 1. Your name 2. Phone number
• Physical Education Office plans to provide an all male class IAP 2008, followed by an all female class during IAP 2009.
