City Development Plan

[moving street vendors out of unafe stalls and into designated areas]

[Summary & Motivation] [Community] [Specifications] [Issues] [Contacts] [Pictures]

Summary & Motivation
Project Initiator: ATS, with Maseru City Council
Start Date: 2005
Projected Completion Date: Not applicable
Current Status: Ideas stage

In any town or city in Lesotho, street vendors gather to sell their goods at the nearest bus stop. Such is the case in Maseru, the capital city of Lesotho. Vendors sell goods from boxes, carts, and small shacks or stalls. Many of these stalls are poorly constructed, leading to wet customers and sellers during rain stoms. In addition, several of them are set up in such a way as to block traffic from easily passing. This traffic obstruction can be especially detrimental given that the bus stop is a high traffic area.

The Maseru City Council has asked ATS to develop a low-cost shelter which could be sold (or distributed freely) to the street vendors. In conjunction with the development of the shelter, it has been suggested that both groups also look at ways to get the vendors to move to a more centralized area.

Such decisions will require mutual agreement from both sides.
