Braking System
[creating a two-position brake to stop carts on steep hills]

Summary & Motivation
Project Initiator: ATS Start Date: 2004 Projected Completion Date: Not applicable Current Status: Design (Student attachment worked on design in February 2005) Many fields in Lesotho are located on step hill sides. Even so, such fields often need irrigation to allow growth. An irrigation pump is available on the market which can be mounted in a tractor-pulled cart. Unfortunately, not many people have tractors, and an ox-drawn cart would be more practical. The cart itself does exist, but it lacks an adequate braking system. To prevent the heavy cart from running into the rear of the animal, a variable resistance brake is needed, and a locking parking brake should also be available for parking the cart.

CommunityThis technology would be marketed to small-scale farmers who need to irrigate crops on hill sides.

Specifications
- Must work on an ox-drawn cart
- Two position brake (Variable resistance and parking brake)
- Hand-operated

IssuesA student attachment has worked on a rough design for the brake, but his design was found unsound by the ATS engineers. Currently, ATS is looking for an improved design which uses the same essential lever concept.
Help is needed in the following areas:
- Redesigning the lever.
- Testing and implementation
