Commercial Paper Briquette Press

[reusing refuse to make an acceptable alternative to charcoal briquettes]

Summary & Motivation
Project Initiator: John Murray
Start Date: 2004
Projected Completion Date: In production
Current Status: Production

As in the larger cities of many developing countries, the presence of garbage and waste on the streets is noticeable. A volunteer with ATS developed a process for soaking any type of paper (Newspaper, plain sheet, etc) in water, placing the pulp in a simple press, and squeezing all of the water from the "briquette."

If made properly, these briquettes can last for a significant amount of time and cook almost as well as charcoal. There is an increasing need for an alternative fuel in cities such as Maseru since charcoal and biomass are ceoming increasingly important.
