We have used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), and voxel based morphometry (VBM) to examine the neural basis of developmental dyslexia in children and adults. Adults with a history of dyslexia exhibited reduced white matter integrity, as measured by DTI, in the temporo-parietal region. Children with dyslexia also failed to show the temporo-parietal activation exhibited by normal-reading children for phonological analysis of visually presented letters. Both adults and children with dyslexia failed to show the normal left prefrontal activation for rapid versus slow non-verbal auditory stimuli, consistent with the idea that dyslexia is associated with atypical processing of rapid auditory input. Remediation (Fast ForWord Language) in the dyslexic children resulted in the growth of new brain activations. I will discuss these findings in terms of tools for non-invasive brain imaging of complex developmental disorders that may be useful in the study of autism.
